anyone know how to hotwire a 2nd gen?

I was discussing it at work with a guy that just had his aftermarket alarm fail, taking his ride home with it, and just saw a guy posting his stolen truck thread.

SO.. got the transponder key, ECM that controls the car entirely... on a factory truck (not one with one of those remote starts that defeats the transponder), can you hotwire it.

Reading around the internet says "no you can't reasonably steal a modern transponder keyed car". The tools time talent trio fails. IT takes expensive tools *usually and time and a good bit of talent. i gather that one can replace the ECU with one that matches a key then do a standard steering column smash "hotwire".. but that seems rather involved.

SO..

What say you. Is it probable, possible or even feasible for someone to steal a factory new condition, transponder enabled vehicle; in particular, the modern tacoma? Keep your anecdotes about your friend's car being stolen out of it, I've known far too many cases of "lightning strikes" to care about anecdotes. This is a technical discussion.
Key theft is also not on the table. Keep your keys on you when you're at the gym/brothel. If someone knows that they are stolen via tow truck for parts, that might be interesting info.

footnote: ecu means the ecu or us that would be affected by the transponder

 

Im glad you asked, because I seen that thread too, and I thought to my self, ho did they bypass this.

Is there a code thrown when car is shut off that they can exlectronically pick up on? Like the door code interceptor.... My take is that the op in that thread was at the movies, they knew it. That gave them 1.5 hrs to overide that system.

Would love to know how.

I've seen quite a few storys about crooked tow truck company's.

 

I'd say tow. It's the easy way. Could drive right beside the cops with the alarm screaming in pain and the cops still would not notice.

 

Even if a low life piece of shit thief were to change the entire ecu, isn't the transponder in a separate area? Meaning they would need the new ecu, new key, new transponder, and break the steering lock?

 

Actually to bypass it is too complicated. (not many people can do it) To a certain degree the transponder is a switch. The ECU recieves a signal from the key and closes the circuit. So it can be jumpered. But you'd need indepth knowledge of the electrical system of that particular vehicle.
A car with those aftermarket alarms/remote start are easier to steal.
Why:
They have a transponder hidden in them. (Remote starts, are actually a bad thing if you're worried about theft)

But I vote Tow'd away!

Just last month a tow company got busted for having stolen cars on their lot. (They were going around stealing them!)

 

That value of the vehicle is less than the sum of there parts. Tow and strip.

Putting it in gear in 4lo might slow them down by a few seconds but they could always put the dolly on the wheels that are on the ground and tow it away

 

Don't vehicles have mercury switches in them that disable the alarm when either end of the vehicle is lifted? aka towed?

 

Why hot wire or tow when you can just go to the dealership afterhours and drive away with the key.

More than a few times, I have been tempted by the dealership not locking and removing keys from vehicles. The last were 2011 Tundra and 2011 Tacoma.

The only way to stop a tow truck is block it in, Even then if they want it they will take it. A tracking device would be the best bet cause at least then you can catch them. That would truly make it worth while.

Turn your wheel all the way over then lock it up. At least then they have to use dollies and that will slow them down some, not much though.

 

my aftermarket on the accord i had didnt, fuckers tried to tow it in sf ... ended up having to pay the jackass $75 to take it off the hook
