Probably safer than most online methods. There are a few assholes in every crowd but generally there are few problems here.

We need a feedback system like other forums have. Pbnation.com has a great feedback system. It really helps in determining whether or not someone is trustworthy.

No issues, I usually check out how long they've been a member and their reputation (just like Ebay) before buying something though. If they've only just become a member and their first post is putting something up for sale, I'd say buyer beware... Most of the things I've bought/sold on here so far have been meeting in person and exchanging cash but the few paypal transactions I've done have all worked out well so far.

I agree rep is meaningless but I don't agree on post count. Someone who's only post is in the for sale thread is a much greater risk than someone who is well known on the forum. If I can see a long term track record of someone who interacts with other TW members (e.g. events), it makes it less risky for me. It doesn't mean one won't get ripped off but it does seem less likely if that person is well-known by others.

Rep is meaningless. The problem with rep is that you don't know what they got the rep for. It could just be buddies who rep each other over stupid comments that make them laugh.

Plus, anyone who already has a lot of rep can quickly build up someone who has none. When I rep a neub for a helpful comment or a cool picture, their rep score jump 4-5 blocks for just the one post.

Plus there is no negative rep. Only neutral, which doesn't affect the score (adds 0 points). This was changed when a bunch of people got all butt-hurt over receiving negative rep and would make silly comments complaining about it.

As I said, you can still get ripped off. I think it's just less likely when the person is well-known.

Obviously, this is a free site so rep and post count don't mean anything legally but it can at least help you mitigate risk. If the guy has been on here for a long time and seems to be a meaningful contributor it adds to his credibility in my book. Obviously he could still screw you but it helps. You are also able to look through his past posts so you should be able to reasonably find out if he got his rep from goofing off and making people laugh or by posting something that actually makes sense and is helpful. If you're going to buy off a site like TW, what else can you honestly do besides saving e-mails and going to legal action if it gets that far?

Absolutely not. I would bet that most high reps are from "make me laugh" posts rather than helpful posts. Most helpful posts are directed toward new people who don't have much in the way of rep points. So you may help them, get about 5 rep points and that's it. A funny post can earn multiple rep points from TW veterans and usually result in multiple 50-100 or greater point reps. So even if you posted 10 helpful threads to neubs and they all left rep, you can get the same amount of points from one post which makes one or two veterans laugh.

You may also have someone who posts frequently in the Underground, which won't show up on a search result. So you may do a search thinking you can find the post on which he or she earned the rep. You might see a bunch of posts in helpful categories when he/she actually earned most of it in the underground.

You don't even know how many posts resulted in the users rep score. As I stated earlier, when I rep someone, they can jump 4 or 5 blocks at once (go from a single green block to multiple dark green and one light green). Get a couple more veterans to do that as well and the user is maxed out. Without being able to see a user's rep comments and see who left what for which post, rep is useless.
