HELP, Differential Oil Advice

I'm considering regearing my truck. What differential oil do you use or recommend? Called my local stealership and they seemed clueless. So I turn to you guys. Found this: http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?product=57904

that redline is also excellent, but the mobil 1 can be found at any auto parts store.

 

ok, so sounds like mobil 1 is the fave. and local is good too. will toyota give me any shit for not using their oil??

 

No they can't. If they do.. they are breaking the law. You can use ANY oil that meets the specs stated by Toyota.

 

Not to hijack the thread but every bottle of Mobile One gear oil I've seen has LS on the outside. Do they even make a 75-90 for non limited slip applications?

it doesn't matter if it has the additive, plus lots of people have had problems running the mobil 1 in the LSD, thats why I asked if he had one.

Im running mobil 1 75-90 in my sr5 open diff with no problems.

 

so have I...ran it in my Tundra for years and in my Taco now...no problems!!

 

I have an 08' prerunner with LSD (red sticker on) and used Mobil 1 WITH the LSD additive...I then noticed a slight grind, vibration each time I'd turn left or right at about a 45deg angle. I searched for advice on this forum, spoke to several mechanics, and was assured that in no way is that rub, vibration correlated with the rear diff oil.

UNTIL...finally, I came across a single post on this forum that had to do with driveshaft vibration that said all he did was change the rear diff oil and problem solved...So, I decided to change the oil again, this time I used Valvoline full synthetic (that has the LSD additiv), AND I also purchased the separate tube of LSD additive. I put in 1 bottle of oil, then the additive, then filled the rest up until started to slightly drip out of the fill hole.

Whammy...problem solved, absolutely no rub, vibration, or anything else that made me cringe every time I backed out of the driveway.

Hope this helps someone else out there some time, money, and their ears from such a gawd awful sound!

 

I was buying stuff at the dealership for my 30K maintenance and asked for gear oil -- they don't have it in the Toyota containers, they buy it in bulk and couldn't sell it to me. So I just got the Valvoline synthetic blend at AutoZone, which is probably as good or better than what they would use.

Some diff manufacturers actually recommend using dino oil. Even on a set of diffs that sees reasonably tough use, a 30K change interval with name-brand dino oil should be fine.

Pretty much all gear oil they sell at your local parts store can be used in open and LSD, you just need to use the additive in an LSD.
