2nd Gen Windshield Prices $$$$$$$

So we have been having some shotty wheather to say the least. I have the original Windshield wipers on my 07. So I decided to change them, went to AutoZone and purchased a cheap set of wiper blades. I've done hundreds of wiper replacements on numerious trucks so this wasn't going to be any different................Wrong.


Some way or another I lost my grip on my pass. Arm and it contacted the windshield, Oops.

So I went to town to see if the glass shops could slow down the spreading of the web. No luck because to drill and fill all the lines would just be to costly to make any sense. A new windshield purchased and installed $150 from glass shop. Told him I would do it later down the road when I have more time.
I decided to price the windshields from my 2 near dealerships...............

For just the windshield not installed. WTF is up with that? So who here can tell me why such a large difference?

 

insurance should cover it for a lot less. I dont know the total but its probably a third of that!

 

time to use insurance brosive... $500 deductible!

 

If the glass shop will do it for $150.00 then I'd be heading back there for a install.

 

wow, that sucks. and that price difference is ridiculous!!! about $1000?!?!? i don't really have an answer to why the difference is so huge. but i have figured out that toyota (and all other makes) make a lot of money in their maintenance/service, collision center, replacement parts departments. for example, i was going to buy a replacement badge for my truck, keep in mind that it is just one single "tacoma" badge from the dealership. $37, for a piece of plastic???. and i just passed 30,000 miles and was going to get my 30k mile tune up done at the dealership. they wanted over $400. i had everything listed on the maintenance log replaced and/or checked for the 30,000 mile tune up done for $76 and some change. it's ridiculous. congrats on getting a good deal though.

 

Yeah i'm certainly going the glass shop route. I was just wondering if anyone here smarter than I could tell me why the $1000 dollar difference.

I'd be crazy to make an insurance claim for this.

Nothing wrong with this option...Just make sure you get good glass like PPG (Pittsburgh Plate Glass) or SGC. Many local shops either carry these brands or can get them at around the price your local glass guy quoted. Just don't let him install some wavy Chinese brand and you'll be fine.

They don't call them STEALERSHIPS for no reason...quote anything from them and 9 outta 10 times they will be way more costly!

 

I did the exact same thing and called the insurance company.. They said I have a 500 dollar deduct. And that it was 480 to replace. So i did some research on my own and found a local shop to do it for 230 after tax and install.

 

It's aftermarket vs Factory

 

Windshield in my Mercedes ML350 (2008) was 3300.00 from dealer, had aftermarket one from local glassman installed at cost of $450.00

 

wow, those prices are ridiculous! Within the first week of owning my Tacoma, I cracked my windsheild and rear passenger window (broken by a crack head). The windsheild was replaced by Safelite Autoglass for $180.00 installed. They said that it was so cheap due to the design of the windsheild, something about it being prone to cracking. Because of this, they buy in bulk!! The passenger rear was actually more then the windsheild at $220.00

 

Werd.

Call your insurance company, it is covered under comprehensive. You may have a 0 deductible for glass. Use Safelite, they have the best price.

 

They probably left out the fact that they buy in bulk from CHINA

Lots of complaints can be found on the glass that safelite installs

 

State Farm replaces 1 per yr. for free.

 

The difference is the quality of the glass. If you look at a lot of the cheaper aftermarket shields sideways you'll see waves in the glass. These waves also create a hell of a glare at night from oncoming headlights, in my experience. All of the poor quality shields I've seen are made in Mexico. You can get a better quality aftermarket glass, but it will be around $100-150 more, worth it in my opinion.

 

Actually most dealerships do not install the glass. It could be factory glass but it is usually installed by the aftermarket shop down the street.

 

You know if you pull the arms all the way up they stay up...
