tach not working anyone that can help?

in the morning when it is first started the tach wont move at all. after a minute it starts jumping around then its fine the rest of the day. only when its really cold out. anyone know how i can troubleshoot this?

Have you taken the cluster out at any time? If so I would check that the connections on the back are ok.

Im not familiar with the tach setup, but I would imagine that its tied into the computer and shift points, so if the sensor had issues you would get a check engine light. So that just leaves the connections between the computer and the tach and the possibility of the tach itself being bad. Its just a would wire, basically an ammeter, not much to it and not prone to failure because of its simplicity. So my bet would be on connections.

Other than that, then see the dealer.

 

no i have never taken it out. just seems wierd that its only when it is really cold out it happens ya know then i go down the block and bam it comes alive. strange

 

Since the tach gauge is electronic and your symptoms occur only in cold conditions my hypothesis is that it involves the electrical contacts. Cold temps are causing retraction in the metal and a "flex" is in the gauges near the contacts that causes the gauges not to work, or to work intermittently when it is cold. I say take out the gauge cluster and see if there is anyway to minimize the flex (possibly tighten screws or add solder to contacts). If that does not fix the problem I'd get an aftermarket gauge - because if it is not the contacts that are causing it then it's a something internally inside the gauge.
