Intermittent wipers...am I crazy?

I have intermittent wipers on my '09 Tacoma. To control the speed on the intermittent setting I turn the wiper control. The control has a graphic on it that shows which speed setting you are on.

I am wondering (this is going to sound dumb) what this represents? On every other vehicle I have owned if you selected the longest "bar" on the graphic it represents the longest delay before the wiper goes again. By turning the dial to the shorter bars, it then shortens the delay between wipes. On my Tacoma however this is the opposite, the longer the bar the faster the wipers go. Is this the same on all Tacomas or is it just mine?

My Montana and Camry work the way I describe above (long bar = long delay).

Am I crazy?

Gotta admit, I never gave much attention to the decals... I just know when I turn the knob, the wipers go faster. I believe mine is the same way. I wouldn't worry about it, it will not affect the performance of the vehicle.

 

I had not really noticed either until I had to drive my wife's van last night for the first time since I bought my truck, and it happened to be raining.

I just thought it was weird or I was crazy.

 

I have noticed the same thing. My Camry is the opposite of my Tacoma.

 

Never noticed the decals on any of my vehicles intermittent wipers. Just turn the switch and don't even think about it.

 

New way to look at it = more wipes per minute?

 

Yep! Most others are opposite the Tacoma. Go figure! It is bass akwards from all others I have seen.

It depends on which wiper stalk you got. Toyota used to have those dashes represent the delay between wipes. It's even stated that way in my owner's manual. But in later years, they began changing that to mean something more like rain.

Old Method: Bigger dash = more (longer) delay
New Method: Bigger dash = more rain (less delay)

This began to vary among the various toyota models a few years ago. And in fact, they began swapping out these new stalks in the Tacoma. So older Gen 2 models have it representing delay, and newer models have it representing rain. This really drives me nuts because my 05 Taco is how all the Toyotas we've ever owned have always been, but we recently got a '10 Highlander and it's the opposite (new methodology). It now means one thing in one vehicle, another in the other vehicle. I'm now constantly turning it the wrong way in both vehicles because I can't keep them straight anymore. One interesting note, the owners manual for the '10 Highlander does not address which way to turn the knob for delay, whereas the owner's manual for the Taco does.

I've notice that on my '10 also. I just figured somebody got a wire crossed at the factory.

I just use rainx. I hardly use the wipers.

 

This could be why I had such a hard time figuring out the intermittent wiper thing.

I just wish the delay had more intervals.

 

One mine the longer bars = longer delay.

I think on my Volvo longer bars = less delay...

 

ya they are backwards I honestly think someone at the factory is just a little a slow and they still have not fired him

 

You have a true Japanese truck. They read left to right. Or, backwards to us.

 

Hey billybobsgoat, the delay is anything you want between both extremes. You're not limited to the notches you feel when you turn it. You can set it in between those indents.
