Changed oil - TOO FULL?

So, I've changed my oil myself on my 07' Taco (1GR-FE) all but two times. (the other two times I took it in because I was lazy). I'm at 45,000 miles now. This is my 7th time changing my own oil on this truck. I change it every 5,000 miles. It's easy now, and it was easy the first time.

I'm saying this because I know how to change my own oil. It's easy! Which is why I don't understand why I'm having trouble.

Here's what's happening -

I took off my old oil filter, the oil fill cap, and the drain plug. I gave it pleanty of time to drain because I went inside the house and ate. About 25 minutes later I put the plug back in, added the new filter, added 5.5 qts of royal purple, and capped it off. Ran the truck up for a bit. let it sit for a few minutes and checked the dip stick. WAY TO FULL!

So I let the truck sit for about an hour and checked it again thinking it would go down. Nope, still too full.

Is it possible that the oil could have not drained out completely? I don't know what else it could be. I re-checked that I had put in the correct amount several times and also had the gf verify I wasn't being an idiot.(which makes me feel like an idiot because I'm . . . changing my oil)

The only difference this time is I switched from mobile 1 (which I had been using since my first oil change) to royal purple. I change it every 5,000 miles not going over.

The truck was on a slight incline. Nothing extreme at all. I wouldn't even notice the incline if my oil level hadn't read so full. I'm just looking for anything.

My oil was changed by sears last time. I always bring my own oil and filter since I don't like their brand. maybe the guy swiped my oil and put generic oil in. You can't go back to generic oil after changing to full synthetic. Maybe they ripped me off and it created some sludge? Lol I'm just looking at everything now. I'm clueless as to why Their's too much oil in my engine.

its probably good, the dipstick on these things are garbage and impossible to get a good reading. Id say you're good. Drive on my friend.

 

The dipstick is shit. If it drained to a drip and you put in 5.5 Qts, you're fine.

I usually change my oil with about 5.25 Qts just to account for what would take hours to drip out making up the difference. Better to be slightly underfilled than overfilled.

 

You'll be fine. 5.5 quarts is 5.5 quarts no matter what the dipstick says.

 

Roughing up the end of the dipstick with sand paper helps but it's still crap.

 

Yeah, I've read the dipstick in the Taco is junk. But I've never had a reading like this. It's way over! I also figured the same thing. 5.5 qts is 5.5 qts. After driving down the road shortly my truck started to shift at strange rpms.

Oh yeah, truck was in 4wd at the time of the oil change but I figured no big deal. I don't see how that would be a problem.

I don't know maybe I'll just drain and re-fill but at 8.99 a qt it's a little pricey.

Damn! An oil change and I'm having problems. I'm starting to feel like the bad dip stick

 

Did you run the truck after you filled it?

did you drain the transmission? was the fluid red?

The dipstick smears on the side of its sleeve as you draw it out. It pushes oil everywhere. Also, if you had just driven the truck, it's entirely possible the oil splashed around further farting up the reading.

Give it a couple days. Nothing's wrong with your truck. Royal Purple is great oil.

Just settle down, go inside, eat a sammich, and proceed with your life as normal.

Thanks ktmrider i like to think I'm not that slow. Though I have seen it done on here before. Idk I tend to think oil changes are pretty easy but I'm going to take a little precaution on this and check how much oil was drained into my oil pan and if its 5.5 qts or so. then I'll just drain a little out of the truck. IDK, maybe I blacked out and put an extra qt in their. After that. . . Then I'll eat a sammich

 

I know you said you had done it before, but in the next post you had you stated it was shifting funny so I just had to ask

 

You touched on my guess. . . . was the truck on an incline/decline when you drained it.

 

Do us all a favor and check your transmission oil...... if it's really THAT full.... something doesn't seem right because first off... you used royal purple.... that alone is a lot easier to read on a dipstick..... let alone it being the first time you used it..... it should read fairly accurately with a light purple tint......

When you say it's WAY over.... how much? 1" over fill line? 1/2"?
