Bought this car as is without testing it, got it and big surprise - will crank but will not start. Checked almost everything fuel system - OK, ignition system - missing spark on 1, 5, 6. Changed spark plugs, checked ignition coils, all the related sensors - seems to be OK. Scoped ECM outputs, and sure enough no signals on IGT1, IGT5, IGT6. Tried to get used ECM to repalce it but it is hard to get. Everybody sends me 89661-04C70 whitch is for 08 and try to tell me they are compatible with 89661-04D40. Am I missing something, or will it be bad ECM.

    09 Tacoma, V6 4.0, 4x4

    Thanks for help

60K on powertrain. If it won't start I'd be tempted to say you have an argument that your issue is "powertrain" related.

I find it odd that you are missing three signals to the ignition coils. Do you have the other three signals? Based on what you have said and posted, it appears to be ECM related (if you have the other three signals-IGT2,3, and 4)

The only other thing I can think of is an issue with the crank and/or cam shaft sensors. They should have thrown a code though.

Yes, I have other 3. I was just wondering if maybe I'm missing smth. I'm still trying to get replacement ECM to test if mine is bad.

I scoped the crank shaft/ cam shaft sensor input at ECM and it appears to be good. As far as the code I don't know if it is doing diagnostics right away after I turn Ignition switch, or when it is running ?

Does it even try to fire? or just crank like there is no gas too?

It cranks and it is firing too. Sometimes it runs for 10 sec and it dies.
It is getting the fuel, every single spark when removed is wet, missing spark is the problem, I think.

I am inclined to agree with your ECM diagnosis. Is there any aftermarket electrical equipment installed?

2 weeks ago my GF's car wouldn't start b/c the engine flooded (yes a modern fuel injected car can be flooded) Hold the gas down all the way and crank the key for about 10 seconds. This will burn of excess gas.
    Then try to start it.

May seem dumb, but worth a try...

There's no spark on three cylinders from the ECM.

No there is not. Guess I will try to find sb who can check ECM without whole car, so I wont have to drag it to the dealer.
