locker question???

Once the locker is engaged on my TRD offroad it will not disengage until i shift out of 4lo. should i be able to stay in 4lo and just push the locker button again to disengage? i figured i could stay in 4lo and engage/disengage by pushing the button to turn it on then pushing the button again to turn it off. i did drive for a little after pushing the button to disengage but it would not get out of the "locked" mode until i went into neutral and shifted back into 4hi.

 

Why are you in 4lo just out of curiosity not sure about your question owners manual may say though.

 

Yes, you should be able to switch on/off as needed. Does the light flash when you try to disengage it?
Sometimes if it is not used much, it becomes a little sticky.
Have you changed your diff oil as recommended?

 

driving around in the woods when i went hunting. Was in 4lo because it was a muddy hill with a turn and wanted better control. was really in 4lo because the locker will only engage in 4lo. just trying to find out if once the locker is engaged if i can push the locker button again to disengage but remain in 4lo.

As senna said, it should lock and unlock while you remain in L4. Any other time, you will only get the flashing light, but it isn't locked until the light stays on, solid.

The idea of the locker is if you get stuck or cannot climb a slippery or rocky hill (in L4), then lock the rear... and once you are past the difficult place or unstuck, unlock it. Sure you can keep it locked longer, but Toyota doesn't want you to!

In my 2 previous Tacomas, I used the rear locker MANY times... and it often had a bit of a time locking... and less of a problem unlocking. Now, with A-TRAC, I don't use the locker anymore... don't need to.
