Transmission shifting is this normal

Got my first Toyota a 2006 Tacoma Trd Quad cab and was wondering about the shifting on the automatic transmision. When you start off and the tranny shifts for the first time you can really notice it. Coming from Chevy which I owned all my life never did this at all. All shift are really smooths. Is this normal on the Tacoma?

 

I have 2006 TRD Sport 4x4 4dr long bed and the shifting is different than the Yukon I had before. I bought it new and now have 84,000 miles on it. I have had 305/70/16 Cooper Discoverer STT tires on American Eagle 185 rims for over 2 years with stock gearing. Even with the oversized tires the automatic tranny has shifted hard all along. Still going strong even with my off-roading.

 

I have a new 2010 TRD sport 4x4 8K miles, Done the TSB, still drives me crazy in slow speeds. Sometimes I am already parked for 1 min when the thing kick it, making me look in the mirror see if someone bumped me!
Took to Dealer... "It is normal for those trucks"

Mine shifts hard also, and seem to be more prone doing it when it's cold outside. Though, when the transmission gets hotter, it shifts pretty smoothly (though, first could shift earlier!)

 

05 here and mine shift rough on the first shift too. It sucks but I guess its normal. If you want the first shift to shift smoother accelerate really slow and gradually it works for me.

 

My 07 shifted rough when it was newer.. sometimes it seemed to "clunk" into gears.

Since about 30-40k it seemed to mellow out and seems very smooth to me now. I got my 100k mile trans fluid changed at 60k and it seems to have gotten a bit rougher again.

In general I really like the transmission. It's the first auto I've had that really holds its speed coming down steep grades, I seldom have to brake much. And the acceleration is impressive for an auto truck - blows past Ford F150s from the light.

My final thought is that the trans is shiftable. How cool is that. Sometimes I do the shifting for approaching hills or to get best acceleration or for towing in a given situation.
