? On Transmission Fluid(manual)

so now that its cold again, my truck shifts like hell. i hate this, in the summer, my truck drives like a dream, in the winter i have to fight with it. my truck has 66K miles on it, i ve owned it since 40K so there is about 13-14K miles on the 75 90 synthetic gear oil i used in the tranny. like butter in the summer, like trying to shift through gravel in the winter. anyone else have this problem, or anything i can do to make it shift better? its usually pretty good once it gets up to operating temps but in this weather that usually doesnt happen until i get to work.

 

had the same problem on my 96, and it seems to be happening on my 08 now that temps have dropped. I am not sure if there is really anything to do besides fighting it until things warm up. mostly sucks when u can't hit first gear.

 

exactly! i hate coming to a stop at a stop sign from like 2nd or 3rd gear, and then having to fight to get back into first gear.

 

Strange that you have problem with Synthethic. Sometimes takes two changes to get rid of old regular oil. Plus you can always try adding some Friction modifier to help.
I did not have this problem in my 1gen Toyota but my VW needed friction modifier in manuall tranny to work normally

 

I do notice it gets stiff on those cold mornings. In 1st you really have to come to a complete stop. But beyond that I have no trouble getting into 1st. I have stock fluid and 48,000 mi. Interested to hear what others say.

 

yeah i used friction modifier in my integra, the pennzoil synchromesh. but that tranny had 175K miles on it haha

once the weather breaks, i'll try swapping out the fluid one more time to see how it works. i'll also ask the dealer if friction modifier in the fluid will do any harm to these transmissions

 

Using GL 4 instead of GL 5 synthetic might make a small difference. Manual specifies either, but the 4 is preferred for transmission type gearing.

 

I had this problem when I used royal purple synthetic fluid in my tranny. I thought there was something wrong with my transmission so I decided to switch it back to regular valvoline synthetic and it performs fine now.
