    i have been reading around just browsing and what not and people refer to the term of "Breaking in" the engine; what exactly does this mean? when does it actually break in? at what miles? or what ever idfk. :)

    When I purchased my truck, I asked the dealer about proper engine break-in (4.0L) and he basically told me to keep the RPM's low-ish for the first 2K. Also not to stay at the same RPM for too long, if you're doing lots of highway driving.

    So the cylinder and cylinder wall and other parts can become perfect buddys for the rest of their lives. Seriously it's because the parts aren't "perfectly" machined to fit together so break in makes them fit perfectly or close to.

    There is a well-defined breaking-in procedure in the owner's manual, basically what Dadic 78 described, along with a no-towing recommendation for the first 1000 miles.

    So as for ragging your engine when it is new. It is metal on metal so take it easy until the pistons have a little time to wear and you know everything is going to work well.

    Second, as far as not driving at the same rpm, the piston rings will rub on the cylinder wall. It is the ring/rings that actually come in contact. If you drive at the same speed it will only wear that high on the cylinder wall. It could possibly cause issues down the road but most probablly not. I say take it easy for a while then flog the hell out of her.

    don't listen to these guys, breaking-in means to take a sledgehammer and "break-in" your engine-- you have to leave a few dings in the engine block, it adds hp-- don't worry about hurting the engine though, it's a toyota!!! it can take it!!!
