The tailgate is EASILY (as in less than 30 seconds easily) stolen.

To remove it, you just open it, and lift up on the right (passenger) side while rotating it, until the gate slides up and out of the rotating hole. The driver's side id completely enclosed, so it can't be removed by that side.

This is where the lock, (or cheap hose clamp) come in handy. It wraps around the passenger rotating hole, thereby stopping the gate from just being lifted out. You first have to remove the object, which takes time and effort. Hopefully more time and effort than the next truck beside you ;)

that cant be removed without the special key.

Though they might not have the key but you guys do know that the strap can be cut with a cutting pliers fairly easily. I've tried it with just the hose clamp mod attached.

Its on the forum as a precautionary tale. To warn you about what you're getting yourself into with this item. The only way this will work with a taco is to cut the cover off. then you have a hose clamp with a fancy end. Save 24 bucks. Buy the hose clamps with the little yellow end for toolless tightening. Tighten it down, then with a pair of pliers pull the plastic top off and the screw that left is a "security" square head.

Or do the hose clamp mod and then grind the head down so no tool will take it off. If you ever need your tailgate off, you will need to cut it off. A thief with a good pair or dykes or end cutting plairs will get a hose clamp off in under 10s.

They know about the hose clamp mod. They read the forums. They are professional-human-filth.

I saw that as well, and seeing as the McGard is my favorite slightly-more-secure-than-a-hose-clamp solution, I decided to give it a try on my 2013.

Sure enough, it still doesn't fit. You can actually close the tailgate with the thing installed, but its an interference fit. So, I trimmed it down with a dremmel.

Pretty ugly, but I'm happy with it...

While a pop & lock and a hose clamp are not theft proof, they will slow down a thief. Most thief's like to be quiet and quick. Anything to slow them down might be enough of a deterrent for them to move on. Backing up to a wall or pole if available, wouldn't give them any clearance to open the tailgate enough to get it off.

If you are in an area where that is a common occurrence, perhaps having the gate hooked up to the alarm system would also work.

I got my 2014 Double Cab last week and I was going to do a tailgate lock as my first mod (I've had other tailgates stolen) and when I put the gate down guess what I saw... it already came with a MacGard tailgate lock. The sticker makes no mention of it anywhere and the dealer never mentioned it. Also, I can't find the key anywhere so it must be a dealer thing but I will ask when I go in for some maintenance stuff.

The dealer probably installed the lock while the truck was stored on the lot to prevent theft, and forgot to take it off when sold.

I'm at the dealership now getting the clear bra installed (they ran out when I picked it up) and the told me that they added the lock to all trucks as a courtesy (no charge) after someone came into their parking lot and stole about a dozen tail gates. The key is with the jack tools along with the lug-nut key.

    Cool!!!! Freebie.

Did the dealer modify the lock in any way to get it to fit? Seems the posts above say the lock is too large to fit.

It doesn't look like its been modified and this one looks a tad bit different from the other pics here. Tomorrow I will try to take it off and see if there's a model number on it and I'll post some pictures.

I agree. If someone really wants something bad enough thay can tow the vehicle. I want to be sure "someone else" has an easier tailgate to snatch and run with. I use the hose clamp w/ plastic key wrench....

also ... "Backing up to a wall or pole if available" an obvious easy solution if available but I never thought of this - especially in a parking garage!
