My 2006 Tacoma is a superb little truck and I'd buy another in a minute if i could afford it, but there is a small problem. at least for me, with this truck. I'm not talking about illumination, I'm talking about the wheel and my right hand blocking any view of the switch, unless I twist my head round , something I don't like doing when i need to grab four wheel drive in a hurry when confronted by a semi overtaking me or approaching me or both, in bad snow conditions in the mountains. Staying in four high all night or day is not a solution, but a smaller wheel would be. Am I alone with this problem and it is simply caused by my long arms, short arse stiff neck, or do even a few of you admit to having not a clear view in oder to avoid having to find it like Braille, night or day? And what is your solution?

My solution would be to buy an RCBS204 lighted switch!

Once you own the truck and use the switch enough you quit having to look to see it.

I really don't understand the problem everyone seems to have with the switch. Sure it would have been nice to have it illuminated, but seriously...it has 3 frickin positions people ! You should be able to use it blindfolded ! If you don't have the 4-wheel drive light lit up on your gauge cluster...guess what ? 2-wheel drive ! You have to push it in and crank it all the way to the right to engage 4lo ...easy peesy, no looky !

    Come on !!

lol @ half the replies talking about lighting, which the OP states is clearly not the issue.

If it is something that is a big issue for you, I suggest you practice reaching for it when you have it parked somewhere.

Similar to when I got my first pistol and wanted to be comfortable taking it out of the holster. Repetition is the key.

damn toyota, how dare they make such a huge steering wheel that blocks my sight of the 4X4 switch

i hate how it also blocks my view of the hood release:mad::mad::mad::mad:

they better come out with a TSB and make a smaller steering wheel:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I got the rcbs204 lighted switch...makes it easy to see. I still need to move my head over to get a clear view but at least I can find it now in a hurry.

If you need to "grab" 4wd in a hurry, then you're not driving under control. If the semi is overtaking you, he wants to go faster than you. Let him!
