I have a friend who is a paralegal for a personal injury attorney that deals with these things all the time. According to her, that is the way it works (in California anyway).

    From the site:

WHEN DOES AN UNINSURED MOTORIST POLICY APPLY?
Uninsured motorist vehicle coverage comes into play whenever anyone who is insured is injured by a driver who is uninsured or underinsured (does not have enough insurance to pay for the damages caused). An uninsured driver includes a hit-and-run driver, so long as there is some actual contact from the hit-and-run driver's vehicle.
Underinsured motorist coverage only applies if the other driver's liability limits are lower than your uninsured coverage limits. Thus, if the driver who causes the accident has a liability policy of $30,000.00 per person, you are not entitled to any uninsured or underinsured motorist benefits if your uninsured motorist coverage is for $30,000.00 per person/$60,000.00 aggregate. If, however, you have uninsured motorist coverage of $100,000.00 per person/$300,000.00 aggregate, you could receive up to the $70,000.00 difference from your own company for an injury to one person, and up to $240,000.00 additional insurance from your own company if there were injuries to three or more of your family members, or passengers in your car.

Just to clarify that I understand your original statement, you're friend states that if you buy uninsured motorist coverage at the minimum amount (15/30), you can't ever collect on it? maybe I mis-understood?

You can collect on it if the other driver has no insurance. However, if their coverage is the same as or more than yours, you'll get nothing from your own underinsured motorist policy.

Agreed. Annual mileage and type of use (work, recreation, etc...) plays a big role in how much you pay.

I pay less than 700 a year for two vehicles, full coverage, (the taco and an 05 CRV). Please remember different states have different minimums and can vary. I am 25 and finally have a clean record. Back in Oregon, I would have been paying much, much more.

    .
A LOT of different factors play into this deal, I'm looking at rates that people are paying in different parts of the country and states other than Cali and other than urban centers like the Bay Area. As far as I'm concerned, insurance companies are the effin Mafia with a license to steal. one speeding ticket and a stupid accident that technically was my fault but there was nothing i could do to stop in time (legal speed, safe distance etc), and i'm getting ripped by the insurance company, i don't EVEN drive the Taco the same way i drove my Saturn (when i got the ticket and accident), so no good deed goes unpunished in Cali, full coverage, gap, minimum on comp (don't give a shit about who i hit, i hope they die, it'll be cheaper), 40 yr old male, live in Alameda, which is next to Oakland, you ready for this? 166 a month. both points drop off next year and i will see some relief but it's a rip folks.
