Just ordered a snow plow

Well after last year and two big storms (1.5' then 3') and being snowed in for over a week at the top of a mountain, I decided I need a plow. The city plows, actually a large front loader, dug us out but the only way in/out was by walking. At the time I only had a 4X2 Taco and even the 4X4s were not making it out.

So I was looking a plows (Fisher, Snoway, etc) and they were a little more than I wanted to pay ($4.5-5.5K) installed. I had given up when I ran across a home use plow made by Snowbear for $2K delivered and I would install, which is what I wanted so I can take the mount off for off-roading when I don't need it.

Of course in 2-3 weeks when I get it, it won't snow

Anyone else have a plow on their truck? How do you like it? Pics?

 

Will be sick as long as you have enough power to push yourself through. I wouldn't expect great gas mileage at all though. How far will it stick out from the bumper?

Sno-way for me! Love it because it's very light (~ 260 lbs) but has hydraulic down-pressure so it scrapes my drivaway clean. Wireless controller, easy on/off...expensive but love it!

 

I would be interested to see how the truck does with a plow. I would not think the truck is heavy enough to push snow effectively. I suspect if it is for personal snow plowing and not commercial you could probably get by. Subbed for pics, let us know how it goes.

I actually bought my first 05 when I got sick of taking the plow off my old 89 pickup to go to work. The truck was getting a bit rusty and tired anyhow so it was time for a new one. I now only use that truck around the house, it hasn't even been registered since 06. But I personally prefer to have my plow rig be a beater. I've got an old school fisher on it that's probably older than the truck. Occasionally the hydraulics freeze up but I can't complain considering both the truck and the plow setup were free back in 03. Occasionally when i'm getting the old rig ready for the next winter I think of selling it and getting something like you have for my Tacoma. Then a few months later I'll slide down my back driveway on the ice and bash into a frozen snowbank and I'm really glad it's the old beater and not my tacoma. The only problem with light duty plows like the snowbears is you can't really push snowbanks back or push a whole lot of heavy snow with them. As long as you are just doing your driveway and you plow every 6 inches or so you'll be fine. I use mine in the summer months to grade my dirt driveway.

 

Came here for the Mr. Plow reference. Did not leave disappointed.

 

I originally had a used Snowbear on my 05 Tacoma. I came into some cash and upgraded to the Snoway ST series. Both are great plows for light/moderate duty use. I plow a 1/2 mi long private road and by 1/3 mi driveway with my truck.

To answer some common questions:

1. YES, even the lowly 4 cyl 2.7L has plenty of power to plow. Just use 4Lo, and don't do stupid stuff like plowing steeply uphill or slamming the plow into frozen (ice) snowbanks.

2. NO, it's not a good idea to drive around with your plow on the truck when the plow isn't being used. It's hard on the suspension, and all the bouncing can damage the plow.

3. The Snoway does a great job backdragging and scraping. The Snowbear not as much.

It is a light weight plow like the snoway and is only about 275 lbs. but I did not like the poly blade because we have a lot of rocks on the mountain and didn't know how it would hold up, thought it might crack.

I have already heard the Mr Plow a few times now and will need to get a jacket like that.

Congrats on the new plow. Remember to mark those rocks with stakes so you don't hit them. The world looks different when there's 2 ft of snow on it.

 

Damn! I've been looking for a plow (Homesteader or Suburbanite) for a while now. I passed on a cheap Homesteader this past September because I recently bought my boat this past summer and didn't want to spend too much last year... I've been kicking myself since passing up that plow.

I'll likely wait until the summer at this point, when the prices drop a bit.

 

If I had that on my Taco here in FLA I could push the doggone snowbirds right off the road.

I don't think that would stand up to my plowing. I'll stick with my old beast. I used this to grade half my yard before laying down topsoil and planting grass. I've graded my dirt driveway with it countless times too. It plows snow pretty good too.
