My Front End Growling/Noise Experience.....

Well after lifting my tacoma, I indeed get that stupid Groaning noise and vibe in my front end. that goes away in 4wd. Well today I had my dealer look at it, and see what they find.
They just got back to me saying, that the only thing they found was the water pump needed changing. B/S...
So that will be done tomarrow and then they will test drive it again. Next time they call, I hope the noise and vibe is gone.
But if its not, ( And I know it wont be) Im ganna tell the tech that I know for a fact that its my front diff. needle bearing being shot, and I need a new diff!

 

And ask the tech to explain why it goes away in 4wd. Once that question has been asked, they seem to get their stories...act together.

what mph do you get it at? man im so confused cause i just got new tires recently and i cant tell if its my new tires or if its the front diff

I only noticed the noise after putting on the tires. Its at 20-25, 35-40, somtiems 45. Im thinking its out of balanced. Ive read that the duratracs are hard to balance

 

mine is def. the front diiff. side bearing. vibes and growling noise happens from 25-45mph.

 

Water pump? BS

 

I had the same thing. Toyota replaced my front diff, now its fine.

 

does it make a difference when the car is warmed up?

Agree with Hunter. Those idiots KNOW it is the differential. How can the pump be the culprit when you have 4x4 in effect???? Can dealers just be to the point instead of bs'ing the loyal customer? Should this be covered under drive train warranty? I think so....

 

I know when I was experiencing that noise it didnt matter if it was cold or warm it made it all the time exept 4 wheel drive i believe.

 

I would tell them not to even touch the water pump.

Go in tell them to show you how its the water pump if it is the water pump it WILL be making some noise, they will have a stethoscope type thing to touch the water pump and hear it very easy.

Tell them to do it then you want to hear it as well, when you hear nothing tell them to :stfu and fix whats wrong with it.

 

Probably your tires. Now if you went from a tire like the Duratrac to a quieter tread tire, then I'd question it. Mine started with 5100's on the front set to .85. Diff drop eliminated the vibe...so I thought at the time (I had BFG AT KO on then). When I got new tires (Michelin LTX AT2), they were so much quieter on the road that I heard the vibe again (when it gets really bad, it gets real audible even over the stereo). So probably just your tires. But the only foolproof test is to switch it to 4wd and see if it instantly feels smoother.

 

Youre probably right. I went from rugged fails to duratracs. Never had any vibes with the rugged fails. I'll definitely get them rebalanced when I get the chance. I'll try a different tire shop.

 

I think its total BS that they beat around the bush just so they dont have to do the work.
Im ganna tell them tomorrow I know its the front diff. bearings, and they need to fix it.

just called them to tell them to make sure to check out the front diff. I know for a fact the problem is there.
She said she will let the tech know and they will re-diagnose it after they do the water pump...
why do they have to BS around like this, it would be much easier just to fix the actually problem and be done with it! I tell them its the diff, but no. they change the water pump instead. BS...BS...BS!!

 

How long does it usually take for them to replace a diff If they descide to do that?

(Im hoping they do replace the diff. and not BS around and say theres nothing wrong.)

 

just got done talking to them and they said there aware of the problem and it is the diff. But they have to call and get the ok to do the work. And they will get back to me on monday. I hate not having my truck! But atleast its ganna get fixed.

Not sure what exactly there ganna fix, or what parts they need to get, I just hope its the right parts.

 

They'll order a whole new front diff and just swap it out. It's about a 4 hour job for them. Total cost on that is about $2,200 (approx $1,600 for diff, $$ for gear oil, $$ for labor).

 

this is covered by the 5 year or 60k powertrain warranty right?
