Have had 3/4 ton diesels from all the big three and love diesels. The Tacoma would be awesome with the "right" diesel but the weight/torque/hp numbers would have to work out.

ditto.. but americans hate diesels... bad 0-60 numbers. bad hp numbers. numbers are all that matter.

The VM engine in the Libies is ok, but the CRD 3.0 from the Grand Cherokee is a much better source for power and daily drivability. I am starting with what I have found to be the easiest swap, someone has already done it, I just want to get a bit more into it to see if that engine works then maybe the 4BT will, and other Cummins engines have better numbers, if numbers is what counts. I hope to get more solid answers once I can speak to the rep about how they do the swaps they are currently doing. Then I am going to touch base with cummins to cross reference the other options to see if another engine would mount up the same but provide better all around numbers.

I voted go all out.. however, not with that crappy motor!

If I were going to waste that amoutn of money and time it better be for an amazing motor. e.g. Mercedes S 420 CDI 4.0L diesel.

If there was a diesel option off the lot worth the coin I'd think about it for sure but I don't think I'd ever swap one.

The fact of the matter is the benefits just wouldn't add up for me. I don't tow anything and if we're perfectly honest here; the 4.0 is MORE than capable on the road and off road too. When's the last time you were in 4lo and needed more torque? Or when was the last time you were on the road and said I NEED (not want) more power?

Foglights are for fog, not oncoming traffic!
I've thought about diesel power all the time.
4 cyl, TDI, big displacement (3.0l)
    140hp, 400lb/ft of torque.
Gear it with a 5sp auto.
    24 mpg would be sweet.
I had a friend that modded an IH Scout with a TD from a UPS truck.
Sounded really cool and good performance.

The problem is not with Toyota or lack of engines... The problem is with communists dictating emissions.
There are Toyota engines that will bolt into our trucks but we can't have them due to idiotic emissions standards that are far stricter then any other place on the planet.
You can have a swap but I would suggest checking if you can register truck after the swap.

He's got it. Also there isn't enough price difference to be economical in the us market. For example in europe diesel and gas are the same price. Therefore, people buy diesels because they get much better mileage than a similar gas engine. With les s strict emissions requirements, less tweaking is required to comply and diesel options are less expensive. This makes the gap between the money you save on fuel and the extra cost of the diesel option smaller, and you break even faster so people will actually buy a diesel. This isn't so in the states. That's why, no matter how much we hope toyota reads this stuff and listens to our opinions, we aren't gonna see a diesel taco. The "normal market" (which we are not) won't buy it.

I looked at bringing one of the cars from abroad. We (my family) have Hilux Diesel (which I drive when I go there ) and friend of mine was selling his Diesel Land Cruiser for $5000, Shipping would cost me $2500 ...but after a year of letters, and contacting everybody from US Customs to DMV I decided it was not worth my aggravation.

I love our 3/4 diesel! I love that the engines run for ever and that you can use veggie oil for fuel. And the whine of the turbo is such sweet music.

Nothing that allows the consumer to save on purchase and save on fuel and will last forever will ever be sold here. It cuts into the big oil & government's raping and pillaging of our incomes and goes against repeat sales motus operandi of capitalism in general. The only way to beat the system is by voluntarily practicing a very high level of inconvenience to one's self..........like public transportation or bicycles or walking.

Anyone know whether or not the Mahindra is gonna make it to US market? I just checked the website briefly and no conclusive info.

No. I don't want a truck that sounds like an old 30-boat backing in to the slip.

I think what you should check is this engine (its Toyota - Hino diesel. 4 cylinder Turbo) Already fits with 6 speed Allison tranny so it would be easier to mate with transfer cases and 4wd system

I had considered swapping engines on a previous truck I owned (86 4x4 Toyota). At the time I was working in an auto parts store and I had talked to a few guys that had done swaps. They all told me the California smog inspection process wasn't worth it. Stupid crap like requiring a fuel line check valve in the vehicle's original fuel tank....that was supposed to be there at the factory.....but wasn't.....and was not available....anywhere:rolleyes: California does their best to discourage you from taking a relatively dirty running carbed engine and swapping in a newer, cleaner, fuel injected engine. Can't imagine how much of a hard-on they'd have if I tried to swap a "dirty diesel" into my truck. Hopefully you live in a free state unlike California.:(

Never mind I thought this was to get Toyota to start getting Toy to make it an option. I am not gonna swap. Sorry.
