honestly the six speed console has a pretty big void under the shift boot that my right knee would love to occupy

You are exactly correct, the 4 door with 4 cyl really lacked ooomph, but I was hoping at least to get decent MPG as a trade-off, and could have lived with it if that were the case.

    Background:
I have had nothing but Tacomas since 1986, including one 4X4, but I guess the newer ones are heavier, or the motor is detuned now. My old ones always got about 25MPG (4cyl manual trans) and ran great.

I also had V6 doublecab prerunners before. I had both the 2003 for 80,000 miles, and the later model 4.0L prerunner which ran great. The MPG on them was only about 20 ave.

I test drove the 2013 4cyl prerunner, it seemed 'OK' even on a hill near the dealer, but after driving a couple 350 mi trips, every uphill grade the pedal was buried in the carpet just to keep up with traffic (empty truck, no passengers). And the MPG was also only about 19-20 MPG, unacceptable for a 4cyl on freeway trips.

Anyway, I did reluctantly trade the 2013 for a 2013 F150 basic V6, auto, gets 22-23 MPG fwy and cruises up any grades with ease. I love the Ford (6,000 mi so far), but really like smaller trucks size better.

I still want a smaller truck that gets 25MPG without struggling to keep up, and will be on the lookout for the 2015 Taco reviews.

Thanks for this forum and all the info.

Really though, lacking both oomph and MPG is not surprising. You have a cab style (size) in which they did not originally offer the 4cyl, I imagine due to horsepower issues. So now you have a smaller engine for a larger truck, so it was probably always struggling. Thus no acceleration and poor gas mileage.

I want to say this body style (05+) did not even off a 4cyl double cab until several years into the run.

I have an older Taco but have test driven the new ones multiple times. Toyota needs to change the way they do their options. Only way to get a sunroof is getting the massively expensive Limited trim. Would rather a spray on bedliner than the composite (scratches less easier). Would like more back seat room. Better MPG. New engines. 4.0 V6 is especially ancient. Needs some modern tech to be more efficient and powerful. Or add a V8 or diesel option. Plastics are kinda cheap for the price point. Update the tranny to have a 6spd auto rather than a 5 and include a taller final gear. Change the styling. I like the styling today but its getting old. More info to the driver. Instantaneous mpg, distance to empty, etc. Tailgate lock. Some other stuff but cant think of it. Don't get me wrong, I love the Tacomas, Toyota just needs to generally improve it since Nissan and GM are coming out with new technology and new trucks.

I wish I could slide my drivers seat back a couple more inches. Would make my legs a lot more comfortable especially on 2+ hour long drives. Wish there was a mod to accomplish this alteration.

My complaints about the Tacoma are as follows:

    1. Not diesel
    2. No bed lights
    3. Cup holders need to be bigger to accommodate my QT 54oz drinking problems
    4. The gas mileage I get is bad for a V6
    5. The after market performance parts isn't as plentiful as it should be.

3-5 is just splitting hairs, I do wish there was a cheaper performance chip to plug and play. Granted they do have a TRD supercharger, aftermarket headers and exhaust and all that. However compared to the American truck companies and their line of products, it's a fraction of what they have to offer.

But all in all, there isn't anything about this truck that wont keep me from buying another one in 10 years. Maybe mine didn't come with heated seats in 2010, buy some aftermarket ones online and add switches in my console. Needs bed lighting and an LED bar for off roading, that'll be a 3 hour job on a weekend and a couple beers. Everything I wish this truck had I can easily do myself, I didn't need a V8 truck to tout around town and never get the full use out of (although I would love to do a Tundra v8 swap and add a supercharger because..... MURIKA).

You do realize 99% of those chips are complete bs right?

My main dislikes are that 6th gear is too low and reverse is geared too high.

I don't like that some of the window and door lock switches won't luminate at night.
Same goes for the 4x4 switch and those terrible speakers in the headliner.
A few other small things, other than that I love this truck.:D

I really don't like the front wheel bearings on our trucks they are garbage. I'm about to change my 5th one and really wish there was a better alternative

2010 Double Cab 4x4 long bed:

boring dash lights - fixable, but should come something nicer
radio freaks out - lights flash, FM puts on CD, etc. past warranty.
no front D-rings in the bed. (2010) fixable, but should come with it
no bed light in the brake light. fixable, but should come with it.

MPG = B.S. i get 18 mostly highway, light foot. sticker on the window said 16/22. record was 20mpg on a straight, level highway, no a/c, windows up, at 70mph, no load. B.S.

the speedo is off by about 5%, shows faster as we know, so the wheels are going fast... 5% of 20 miles is 1 mile, so if you just got 20mpg on the freeway, you really went 19 miles. B.S. liars. everybody knows you don't get what's on the sticker but come on...

disgustingly overpriced, for $32K you should at least have pleather seats.

but i bought the truck for it's legendary reliability, so far it's been perfect, i expect it to be for at least another 15 years.....
