winter driving has knocked my MPG from 23.5 to 20.5 and that's basically 50/50 city and freeway. Although it has been DAMN cold up here lately and I've been being a wuss and letting my truck warm up in the morning. I think the high tomorrow is 6 degrees... gotta love the midwest

My brand new 2011 4 cyl. 5 sp. 4x4 has averaged 17 MPG over the two tankfuls I have run through it. I now have just over 500 miles on it. This is all 3 mile commutes. No highway at all.

in winter time here, i am getting 22.5-23 MPG around town and highway mixed, But i was getting 19-20 untill i switched all my gear oil and transmission oil to Synthetic, Engine oil to synthetic and i droped in a AFE filter and removed the secondary filter and fender resonator, looking for 25 MPG in the summer

    i have a 2010 Reg cab 4x4 5 speed

The engine is not up to operating temp and you'll probably have l lot of moisture in your oil. You will also get pretty bad mpg with a trip that short. Change your oil more often or take a longer route to work. But with a 3 mile commute 10mpg would still not dent the wallet too much.

People seem to get WILDLY different mileages for no obvious reason.

I'm wondering if its ECU related or parking brake problems the way some say they just cant get it going.

It is very obvious. People have very wildly different driving styles. I downshift a lot and coast in gear and do about 70 max on the highway - others may not. Also wildly different temperatures and gas can cause this too. If you have checked everything you have to start taking these things into account and modify the driving style or live with it and move on

Correct you have a 2wd 5 lug. If you had 17mpg with that then something is wrong. 4x4 city driving and 16-17 is normal.

Weird. I get just under 18mpg with 285R75R16s on it. And 200lbs of armour up front.

I have the TRD OR V6 4x4 with approx 2100 miles on it. I averaged 18.1 MPG mixed driving each fill up. Changing to a 285/70/17's and 3" lift I have decreased MPG down to 16.5 mixed driving. Around 312 miles per tank full before, now around 287 .

Still better than my bone stock 4.0L V6 08 Ranger 4x4 which got an average of 16MPG.

I would guess your I4 should be getting at least 20+ MPGS, more if 2WD

i seem to do better around town than i do on the highway honestly. cause around town i never go over 2k RPM's and i am getting a consistant 23 MPG but when i drive highway i am getting about 21-22 MPG's and thats not going over 70.

i am sure in the summer it will go up

My v6 6 speed 4x4 gets 14-16 in town. My company truck get around 18 with mostly in town but jumping on and off the highway for up to 20mins at a time. It's a regular cab, 4cyl 5speed with probably 1000 lbs in it all the time and a big aluminum camper shell.

Is yours an auto? My bosses truck is set up almost exactly the same as mine, but he only gets 16mpg under the same conditions. We think part of it's the type of shell he has (less aerodynamic), but I think the auto trans in his is at least part of the difference. He drives very mellow compared to me, so I don't quite understand why his MPG sucks so much.

I will say it does climb grades just fine and once up to speed stays there with ease but yeah, I would expect better economy from a little 4-banger ;)

Dump in a can of techron or redline fuel system cleaner if you havent in a while. I only have 13000 on my v6 and noticed about a 2mpg increase from the redline cleaner.

Did you take into account the odometer error from having the larger tires?
