stupid disposable oil box did'nt absorb the oil the way it should've.. lol epic pwnge.

 

haha, is that a trash bag in the box? You're idea might have worked if you had a bigger box and one of those heavy mil black trash bags. Hope the concrete didn't stain too bad.

 

Spread it out so it doesn't stain too badly.

lol.. no they sell those disposable type oil absorbing boxes at checkers, etc.. and the cotton type lint material inside didn't quite work right resulting in overflow.. lol fuck that box, i don't recommend it.

that's why i use a thing called an........ OIL PAN

 

My oil shot out when I pulled the drain plug. I had 8 quart round pan under it and it still splashed oil out of the pan because of the force that it came out of the truck. I use large pieces of cardboard under the vehicles when I change the oil. It cuts way down on the mess and when you're done you can slide the cardboard out and your tools, rags, oil etc are a lot easier to pick up.

 

Ouch, that sucks. Get your self some powder laundry detergent and spread it all over the spill. If its outside just let the rain wash it away, if inside let it sit for a few days and wash it away with the hose. Will be the cleanest spot on the ground!

 

Next time buy a real oil pan and then recyle the used oil. It does not take a lot of time and it is the right thing to do.

I'll admit that I have actually used a packing box with a heavy duty garbage bag in it before when I had not other options but would not recommend it. You are basically just containing the technical majority of the oil but there's plenty left on the ground when you're done.

Also, those epoxy garage floor treatments are AWESOME at making these types of spills very temporary. One time I forgot to open the air vent on my oil pan and had at least a quart overflow. All it took to have the floor looking like new was a few rags (old t-shirts/towels/etc that are past their useful life) and a quick wipe with some windex at the end.

 

I had something similar happen on my first oil change WITH a correct drain pan. I couldn't believe how fast it came out and splashed everywhere. Installed a Fumoto drain valve ( http://www.fumotousa.com/ ) and couldn't be happier with it. Third vehicle I've had one on with never a problem.

Just curious for everyone that has the oil shoot out excessively, do you remove your oil filter before/after pulling the plug? Just curious if this would cause greater force down.

 

That's what I did along with removing the oil cap. I think it's vented too much and causes it to come out too fast for pans that are too shallow like I used.

 

I have a big box of those commercial oil diapers from work, for catching small drips.

F the kitty litter!!, get a bag of dog bedding/cedar shavings from a feed store, soak up the oil with the shavings, scoop up the shavings and toss them back in the bag. Much better absorbent than cat litter and infinite absorbability.

Money well spent on a black deep drain pan from the auto parts store.

 

Weird... I normally just drain my oil straight into the storm drain.

 

I don't think I would like that plug simply because anyone can drain your oil without tools in a matter of seconds. It may never happen, but I would be paranoid about it.

 

i just stay with an oil drain pan. much easier

 

I use an oil drain pan and recycle my oil. Autozone takes 5gal per customer per week which is more than enough. I usually have shop towels, cardboard, brake cleaner,or gloves when i do my oil change

 

Every time I change my own oil, regardless of the vehicle, I get a little visit from Captain Hazelwood......

(I could say BP or the Deepwater Horizon, but that event actually involved human fatalities at the time of the disaster.....)
