Frame and Underbody Rust spots

I have an 06 tacoma and I some rust stops already on my frame and other parts under the body. Would could or should i do to get rid of all the rust and prevent my truck from rusting apart 10 years down the road. I was wanting to drive this drive til it dies, but with the rust, im thinking the frame will not outlast the engine. I would get under there myself and grind and sand the rust spots off and then repaint, but i cannot get to some of the spots on the frame near the engine. Ill try to get some pictures up asap. Thanks for your help.

I would definitely treat the spots with chemicals made for rust. Paint it with a quality paint and undercoat it to. Unfortunately living in Fla near the beach you could be chasing rust issues for a long time. Do it now too, don't let it get out of control.

Do not use sandpaper, it will not remove ALL of the rust. All of the rust must be removed in order for it not to come back, chemicals work best. I used to be a body man in a Ft Myers, Fla paint shop, this is what we did.

Use small brush, to get around parts in engine bay. Internally frame needs to be painted as well because most likely it will rust. Paint with good primer first, Something used for farm equipment. Dont sweat about cleaning all rust completely. Just give good thick coating of primer first. then when it dries use enamel paint. If you can make several coats of primer.

First I have heard of this my frame has rust issues as well nothing bad bad but kinda threw me off because ti was a 06 model with 36k miles.....

When I bought my truck new in 05 it came with a 5 or 6 year paint guarantee against defects, not sure if it covers rust. I am also not sure if it is the extended warranty I bought either, I have it though. I am not sure how much a body shop would charge but it definitely would be no less than 200-300 bucks. I am not sure about a lot of things. lol

Go to eastwood.com they have everything you need. Their rust encapsulator is a great product (what I painted my frame with) and they also have a new internal frame coating product too. If you don't like the flat black of the rust encapsulator they offer a few different finishes of chassis paint too. Clean off anything loose with a wire brush, wipe it all down with laqcuer thinner, and go to town.

I have used a product called Lanox MX4 on my Land Rover and will apply it to my Tacoma in the Spring. It is a spray. It is a lubricator and rust preventer, basically behaves like a penetrating oil, it really travels. The cool thing about it is that you can spray it very liberally, all over the place. The underbody coatings and paint certainly have their place, but this you can get into all the nooks and spray it upside down and through a staw and get it in the really hard to reach areas. A similar product is called Fluid Film. It should last a while, but you may want to re-apply yearly or every other year.

Both product are lanolin based, smell like mix of lotion and a wool sweater.

I thought about the painting and sanding, but when you look under a vehicle there are so many nooks that is just impossible to sand and coat everything.

Stick the straw in hole in the boxed part of your frame and blast away, not sure ow you would ever sand/paint in there.

Obvioulsy, sanding/painting would be great for bad trouble spots that are easy to get at, but for a more general coating, or to "cover" light/young rust, these products work great.

Even a year after application, if my touch my chassis, it will leave an oily film on my finger.

Is Lanox MX4 a rust converter, or does it just cover it up and seal it?

It is not a converter or a sealer really. It coats the rust, and everything else in oil/lanolin basically. If you touched a kleenex to the chassis, it would absorb some of it. The Fluid Film, leaves a bity of a thin waxy film, as the name describes. I noticed that the Fluid Film as active corrision inhibitors, that is pretty cool.

Sanding and painting are the most comprehensive option, but like I said, hard to do in tights spaces and at all.

One thing I have been told to be concerned with with products like Waxoyl or other rubber/tar coatings is that water "could" get behind them and held against the metal. Not sure how legit of a concern this is.

I think the lanolin products are great, they are going all over the underside of my 2011 Tacoma. They are also great in the tight and odly shaped places (On my Land Rover my coil springs are covered in this oil, imagine trying to sand and paint an installed coil spring). I think of them as proactive prevention or for addressing light rust.

If you have got really agressive rust or perforation, they might not cut it, but they are very good.

My advice, sand and paint any really bad spots, power wash the under side, let it dry totally, then spray anywhere you can reach with Fluid Film or Lanox MX4 and reapply every two years.

Also, these oils "travel." Spray it to an area, come back a day later and the covered area is now much larger, cool.

Sand, Clean, Re-paint.

If you do undercoat, do it right: Get the undercarriage fully detailed BEFORE winter hits, get it coated in the oil stuff, and recoat about once a month til winter's done. Wash regularly.
