Not happy with 285's, Need opinions, smaller tires and grill ()

I love my truck, 3" OME with 285/70/17's terra grapplers wrapped around xmd 122's (see my gallery), but since I put them on I find the truck is underpowered on acceleration and of course (expected) reduced MPG, plus I seem to rub like mad when I cut the wheel in reverse (only reverse, weird eh?). So I've been thinking of going down a size of tires to maybe 265 or 275... think that would help the acceleration bit and get it back more towards stock feel for accel and power? (No I'm not going to regear the truck).

Next... my grille. I got a mesh grill and FJ TOYOTA emblem I'm going to install, but question is... color match or stock chrome grille? Its been driving me nuts and I cant' make a decision (grrr).


Thoughts on either?

285/75R17 is a big 34" tire. Most running 285s on 17" rim are using 285/70R17. Is that what you meant? If not, you could swap to that size. But you need to trim plastic inner wheelwell even at that size.

 

Nope.... 285/75/17's. Of course the fact that Discount Tire ordered my Grapplers, and after asking for a LT tire I got the "E" tire which is heavy as hell, didn't realize until after i got em on and driving them that it was I got

 

thats impossible? you rub the uca also?

 

No rubbing on the UCA, got aftermarket LR UCA's.... I can see I rub the frame close to the cab when I'm cut all the way over, and its only in reverse... but I do rub the plastic and I have trimmed.

what does it cost to regear anyways? downside to doing it?

 

My 285's rubbed my fender(back side) only in reverse, then I got the alignment shop to align it more towards the front. No more rub in reverse. Had to trim alot on the front though lol

Since you have LR UCA's you can have the alignment shop move your tires towards the front fender more. (With the LR UCA"s it is possible to have your tires positioned where you want it)

As for the power?? Floor it and tell me the truck doesn't have power???

I can beat a stock 05' Tundra off the line, and I'm running 35" tires!

 

I'm confused. Your first post says 285/75r17s. But your sig says 285/70r17. Either way, I'd keep the tires and find a shop or do the cab mount chop yourself to alleviate the rubbing. I'm running 285/70r17s now and don't really notice any significant power loss. Theres still plenty there imo.
