    Hey gjbonner:

Here's a good pointer for you if you have that shudder when starting off from a complete stop. Prolly also a good idea for an Admin to add this info to a sticky thread or general "What's causing this weird *insert symptom* behavior?" FAQ.

I had a bit of a light ticking noise coming from my driveshaft. It's a 1998 2WD Extended cab & 2RZ-FE and 195.000 miles on the clock. So it's excusable that the driveline would have some sort of issue finally. Ticking noise was the U-joints, no biggie & a relatively common thing. Right before I installed the replacement U-joints I started noticing a bit of a shudder when accelerating from a dead stop. It did so for the first 10 or 20mph, in 1st & second gear shifts. Transmission = automatic. To me the shudder sort of felt akin to a manual transmission clutch disk slipping. I did for a moment have a bit of a worry, thinking it was the auto trans and/or torque converter commiting suicide....

The fix that eliminated this type of shudder was the replacement of the U-joints and carrier bearing. Took all of 1 hour to fix in my Temple Of All Things Combustion, aided by my Toolbox Diciples & Bible Of Service Shop Manual.

My driveshaft dropped out of mine going down the highway as well about 2 months ago. Luckily I was on the exit ramp and not going full speed. Unfortunately it cost a few hundred dollars to source a replacement rear flange yolk that was damaged, and then 2 mos later I find out those vibrations I've been feeling at 65mph is my driveshaft out of round by 15/1000ths. I'm looking into a local shop or High Angle Drivelines to replace it with a one-piece. I just can't decide if aluminum would mean I don't have to worry about the "jump roping" at higher speeds some people complain about with the TW shaft.

I exaggerated a little bit. They had to do the ujoints, and the yoke plus the labor ended up being a few hundred dollars.

It's all about the wording. I thought you paid $300 for a part that can be had for $60. I didn't want that to happen to anyone else.

Nah. Someone else reading this thread later on will probably appreciate your post though.

Old, but excellent drive shaft thread! I am DEFINITELY going to get a one piece shaft for my
    2011 Taco 4x4 6-speed manual V-6. I have installed a 2 inch body lift and a 6 inch suspension
lift and the 2-piece shaft fully sucks! The center bearing (or drop bearing or pillow block) really
sucks if you've done any suspension/geometry mods. The stock rubber bushing center bearing
is so that the truck will drive all comfy-cushy for commuter drivers.

Here are a couple of vids of the drive shaft issues I was facing after my lift:

CENTER BEARING OBSCENITY!!!! AND LOOK AT THE LASAGNA STOCK LEAF SPRINGS!!

Long boring story short: I am going to break some hard earned bread and have a local shop
custom fab a one piece drive line for my Taco. I live in Sacramento, CA and will give these
guys a go. They have been here for quite a while and they have a good Yelp score and also
a nice "History Of" page at

    https://www.drive-lines.com/dlssac.com/index.html

For the sake of all of this thread's visitors, I will report back as soon as I can about my experience
going to a 1 piece shaft.

    It is a bolt-on kit from budbuilt.com
You can see in the video that the bar
worked pretty well against the torsion
from the stock leaf springs. I haven't
filmed it yet, but I have replaced the
crummy stock springs with a stout
set of OME leaf springs. TOTAL
NIGHT/DAY! Axle twist is now ZERO.
The very last issue with my final drive
now is the friggin' vibrations due to the
poorly designed 2-piece drive shaft and
    the sloppy center bearing.

my problem is the OME dakars are going to be too stiff for my tastes....

That budbuilt kit, where does the front bolt to? Same cross member as the carrier bearing?
