Exclamation Help 2007 Tacoma will not start

Bought my new Tacoma last week and here I sit in the driveway with a truck that will not start. Battery has good power (strong engine whirl), no obvious cables hanging loose in the engine compartment, plenty of fuel and the ignition disable light goes out when key is inserted.

I know this is a new truck and I have consulted the owner's manual incase there is some security feature I am missing.

I am stumped and about two seconds from calling AAA for a tow to the dealership. Can anyone offer any advice of something obvious I am missing?

Had a '94 Silverado before this truck, so I am no stranger to working on engines. Meaning, no reply is too technical. Thank you!

No clue......but if your engine is turning (from the starter)....and not firing....you have either ignition problem or fuel delivery issue. But trying to identify and fix a problem via the internet is like conducting in flight rocket repair.

Getting it to the dealership is the wise thing to do. Dead battery and loud whirl points to an alternator related problem. Let us know what the dealer tells you.

Just a thought..there is a anti-theft system which is deactivated when the transmitter chip (thats built into the keys) is in the proximity of the ignition. I know you mentioned the ignition disable light going out but I would still try a different key..I'm not sure when the anti-theft system is activated if the engine will turn over at all or if it just won't fire. If a different key doesn't work maybe the anti-theft system has failed in that it's not acknowledging the chip in the transmitter. Keep us posted..A new Tacoma not starting is extremely rare.

Along the same lines, you may want to shut the doors and activate the alarm. Then deactivate it and see if she starts. Just a thought.

Toyota has a TSB out for 07s that have a no start, or extended crank condition. The problem seems to be in the programing of the ECU. I have a friend with an 07 that had the same problem and the dealer reprogrammed the ECU and everything has been fine since then.

Just curious if there's a online source for the TSB's. The only one I could find for 07 was the Tire pressure monitor system.

I don't know if there is any information online as far as a TSB number. My friend took his to the dealer and they told him about the TSB and reprogrammed the ECU in his truck.

Well, the Tacoma saga continues. After the initial posting of this thread, my dad made the suggestion, "use the key in the door to unlock it." Did that and she started first whirl. Okay, figured it was a random glitch. With all the ones and zeros, code is bound to be jumbled occasionally.

Well, she acted up again this morning. 5:45AM, leaving for work, and she will not start. Tried key in the door method, nothing. Tried the book suggestions, nothing. Verified gas and battery charge, nothing. Had to wait until Service shop opened at 7AM to make the call. Ended-up having to have the truck towed in.

Sure enough, tow truck disconnects, service guy puts key in the ignition and she starts right up. Guy gives the look and I told him to drive it around the lot, shut it off and start it again. He does that, and the truck will not restart.

Mentioned TSB regarding ECU. I do have the latest version loaded. OBD is pushing Imobilizer fault, but only intermittently. Service manager eventually made the call to replace the ECU. They set me up with a rental and I was on my way.

Should have her back tomorrow night, so I am remaining hopeful. Will post with the results. According to Service Manager, this was the first time he has seen this and when Toyota Corp. was called, they had no published issues. Never fails.

Well, good luck. I am just glad that the OBD was pushing Imobilizer fault codes. At least that narrows it down quite a bit.

And the saga continues...

Dealership still has my truck as of today and I am still driving the glorified go-kart of a rental car. Called service department and I was informed the ECU is on back order with no projected delivery date.

But the plot thickens. I am in the military (I fly 60's, 58's and now 47's) and have to go out of town for three months beginning next Friday. I told the service manager, next thursday morning, I need the keys to an operational truck, be it my truck or another 2007. He stumbled and became very jittery on the phone. I have been documenting every thing and researched KY's lemon laws. They get four attempts to fix the same problem or if I lose use of the vehicle for 30 days or more during the first 12 months of ownership, the vehicle must be replaced with equal or greater value or full money refunded.

The most agrevating part of this is...I owned a 14 year old Silverado that never gave me a day of trouble. Being that aging happens, I sold the Silverado and bought this new Toyota because of their documented reliability and here I sit in this situtation.

Is there anyone in the automotive industry that can shed some light on policies? Is there a likely hood that they would replace the truck I bought with another truck? Or are they more likely to rip an ECU out of a truck on their lot and hope that fixes the problem because of my timeline? The specific model I bought, V6 SR5 with 4x2 powertrain was difficult to find and I cannot imagine them getting another one in only a couple days notice. Would that mean a chance for an upgrade to the 4x4 due to availability?

Thank you to everyone who has replied to these postings! I very much hope to post GOOD news in the near future.

I would start the dialog with the dealer along the lines of....so, which one of these trucks here will be the replacement? How would it look in the local news that your not supporting a warfighter, by jerking him around?

I'm sorry to hear things with the vehicle are not going well. I'm afraid I'm not familur with KY law, but if it were me, I would start pressing for an immediate fix due to your circumstances.

Be safe, and no hard landings.

Incase anyone is curious about the Taco Saga, here is the latest update. To date these have been replaced:
ECU
ECU Imobilizer
Fuse box pulled and checked for loose connections.

According to the service manager, the phone has been used all week calling Toyota Corp Service to sort this out and no one can figure out what is going on. If nothing else, this has turned into a challenge for the tech's because everything should be working now.

After replacing the imobilizer this morning, the truck ran briefly then stopped starting again. The call was then sent up to the Regional Service Manager as to what to do next.

Tomorrow is the last day before I hit the road on Friday morning, so a decision is due tomorrow morning. When I asked what plan "B" was, the reply was "I am making that call right now to the Regional Rep."

So, here we go... :-)

To be honest, what ever is sorted out, I still want to know what was wrong with the truck. Random loose wire somewhere shorting out and frying the imobilizer? Just curious.

So, I got my truck back yesterday. Ran fine for the rest of the day. And now I find myself sitting in my driveway, all my bags loaded for the road, and I have the keys to a truck that will not start again.

According to the paper work, they replaced:
ECU
ECU Immobilizer
Primary Coil

I think it is reasonable for me to demand a new truck at this point. I am doing the trick they showed me to get her running again, driving straight to the dealership and not leaving until I have keys to a new truck. I have already lodged a complaint with Toyota and Consumer Digest and I am two seconds from emailing the local news station.

Seriously, I am at my wits end.

I seriously can't believe a crew of trained Toyota techs can't figure out why one of their trucks wont start. I think you're doing the right thing though, make as many complaints as possible with as many people/agencies as possible. The local news outlet is a great idea. As soon as the dealership owner finds out his dealership is going to be on the news for selling defective vehicles then not fixing or replacing them he'll start moving real fast to make the situation go away. Good luck with the truck.
