Just the same squeak that all the manual transmissions have . Nothing that seemed like internal transmission failure.

Be careful, they are also known to have notchy shifting, and also sychro failure. I recommend all manual owners to buy the TRD shifter because it seems to get the shift gates dialed in correctly. As far as the synchro's go be very careful with those. I suggest doing some research on the different kind of oils that are out there for it. As far as I know synchro's are made of brass so you have to get something that plays well with those.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
One thing to keep in mind is you're at a place where a ton of guys are willing to voice any small issue they've had and those will be talked about extensively. MILLIONS of people own Tacoma trucks and are just in love and will tell no one over the life of the vehicle, this is just how it works. Unhappy people will seek out people to complain to and happy people are far more likely to just not mention it to anyone.

Read up. But take it with the knowledge that someone who reads 100 bad reviews and considers it a bad truck is selling them self and the truck REAL short.

Yea I understand that the guy with a problem usually is going to make the most noise...I own a 2001 Tacoma and love it, I'm just planning to upgrade while I can still get good money for my old truck! Reading around just to see what people are saying.

85K miles, 6 years, non warranty problems= $90 mud flaps Solved by Weather Tech!

Pretty good record I'm thinking and I'm talking from the perspective of a half century of vehicle ownership.

    Is it perfect? No!

Is it better than the competition? For me there was nothing close. For you?

Would I buy one again? Yes, if they made some significant changes other than BNG.

And for those who say they don't make them like they used to I say Thank God!

    - 1000 miles: leaking refrigerant from AC condenser fitting, cross-over pipe rattling on heat shield, stripped engine cover bolt.
    - 5,000 miles: blower motor tick/squeal.
    - 10,000 miles: Not defects but observations-> a pop in the steering wheel when moving back and forth rapidly, engine sputter when cold and sitting overnight (only once), thud sound from rear when stopped and then releasing the brakes (maybe axle wrap), forward lurch when stopped and the AC kicks in (my 2003 did this also)

Overall a really good truck and much safer for someone with a family. From an offroad perspective I do miss my 2003.

Most syncro failures can be linked to drivers that rest their arm on the shifter lever when driving, which causes excessive wear.

06 Access Cab V6 4wd. It continues to be very reliable but has some annoyances.

    - Cold start engine rattle. This is not the "normal" ticking sound, it's much louder and goes away within a few minutes of driving. Can't pin point it with my stethescope, it's been an on going problem for over 40,000km, has not gotten any worse. Piston slap is my best guess.

    - Exhaust manifold "flutter" noise at certain RPM's since I have owned the truck, I was well past the warranty before I realized there was a TSB to upgrade to the 07+ tubular style manifolds.

    - No grease zerk on the drive shaft slip yoke, next time I have to pull the drive shaft to grease the splines im just going to add my own zerk.

I love the truck but I've got one major problem. About 6 months ago I noticed a rough texture to the paint on the roof. Within a month the paint deteriorated to the point where rust began to show through. The roof has been waxed in the past but I will admit that it didn't always get waxed as often as the rest of the truck because it is more difficult to reach. I've seen a few other posts about this problem.

This is kind of a goofy way of hopefully stopping the sound, but it has worked for me on other cars. Get some foam rubber and stuff it between cables and such behind the glove box. If you can take it out that might make it easier. This is to isolate the ''noise maker". One time I also took out the screwsl holding a glove box in place and made like little foam washers to further isolate the noise maker. That worked immediately and for the 10 years I had the car. It is cheap and easy and MAY work. Good luck.

    6) Some of the biggest things I have noticed about this truck is the wind noise when driving on the interstate. The rattle i randomly have that sounds like it is coming from my entune head unit. My rear leaf springs squeak on and off. Random axle wrap thunks when I come to a stop sometimes.
Must of these issues are minor, but they are still annoying with a brand new truck.

But all and all I do love my truck and I still think the 2nd gen Tacomas are one of the best looking trucks ever produced!
