10k oil change??

    so took my truck to the dealer for its 1st "tune up" (tires rotated and fluids check which took exactly and hr like they told me which quite nice compared to what happens at a chevy dealership like with my last truck) and didnt realize they dont change the oil til 10k since its supposidly synthetic oil. SO my question is should i change it now around 5k since it is after all the 1st 5k miles on the truck?? :confused::confused:

    IMO I would never have 10k miles on an oil change.

    not sure who told you to change it at 10K, but i never go more than 5...if my dealer told me that, I'd find another service department...

    You have a Maintenance Required Light that'll blink at you when you reach 4500 miles and stay on constant when it reaches 5,000miles (since the last time it was reset). That's set from the factory.

    Are you sure they didn't change the oil? They might have changed it and reset your maintenance required light....and told you that you don't have to change it again until 10K miles.

    yes the maintenance light did go off after they got done but the lady there told me that i supposidly have synthetic oil and it doesnt need to be changed til the 10k service and only the tires were rotated and inspected. But personally i feel somewhat uncomfortable not changing it being its 1st 5k. But will this void the maintenance plan if i go and do this????

    They are mistaken. Toyota released an update that said that the 2.7 can go 10k between changes if you use synthetic oil.

    I emailed Toyota and asked specifically if the 4.0 V6 Tacoma could go 10k miles on synthetic. They said no, they were not changing the 5,000 mile oil change interval on the Tacoma 4.0 V6.

    So unless they've changed something since about 8 months ago, there is no accepted 10k oil change interval for the 4.0 V6 Taco.

    Now, out of warranty...I would not hesitate to extend oil change intervals using synthetic oil and a quality filter, so long as the oil analysis says the oil is not bad.

    Are you saying the maintenance required light started flashing at you AFTER they performed the work?

    Or are you saying it was flashing BEFORE they performed the work?

    I'm trying to figure out....Did the dealership reset the light and didn't change the oil? If yes...that's total BS.

    I'd trust the maintenance required light before trusting anyone at the dealer. If Toyota changed the interval to 10K - then owners should've received a notice AND Toyota should have the ECM's reflashed to reflect the 10K so our maintenance required lights will go on at the appropriate mileage. Not only that...but you don't know for sure what kind of oil is in them from the factory.

    If your truck has 5,000 miles on it and you've confirmed they DID NOT change the oil..... I would definately change it!!! Look in your owners manual on how to reset the maintenace required light.

    I don't think I would ever want to put 10k (assuming miles) on an oil change, but I have done close to just using the oil monitoring system.
    Do your research... don't blindly waste oil.

    Your driving pattern should be what determines how often you change your oil. Most quality synthetic oils will do fine running 10K miles. My concern would be why is the dealer telling you to go that long when Toyota specifies 5K. The other question I would be asking is what did they charge you for the service? I think I'd be looking for another service dept. If they're skimping on performing an oil change specified by Toyota that takes 10 minutes to perform, what other services are they cutting corners on?

    The only reason to change oil at 5k is if you worry about warranty coverage being compromised, which itself is not a serious worry because oil related failures just never happen in modern engines. Even those abused with NEVER changing oil in the warranty period!

    But that IS why it's so odd a dealer service department would say that. The only fathomable reason is they are confused with other Toyota models that have been changed to 10k change intervals (Camry for instance).

    I was told to gO 10k by my dealer as well. They put mobil 1 synthetic which should be fine until then.

    I try to change mine at 3000 miles if I can, then i recycle. I spend about 30 bucks each oil change, but I get to know my truck better by going through all the fluids, checking/ greasing u-joints, diff fluids. I'd like to keep this truck as long as I can.
