I'm confused here, if you have the TRD Sport, which i know has the limited slip.

Then you shouldn't have had to work the brakes? Shouldn't the limited slip take care of that?

lsd is pretty much like an open-diff offroad

yes, it's the sport with the LSD. the limmited slip will work like a locker up to a certain amount of force is applied. then you have one wheel off the ground, and are going up a very steep incline, the "clutch" mechanism in the differential is not strong enough to grab it completely.

i've jacked the rear of the truck off the ground for an experiment before. when in neutral with both wheels off the ground, if you manually spin one wheel on a LSD, the other wheel will spin the same direction, and the same speed. if you do the same with an open diff, the other wheel will spin the opposite direction. however, if you get a friend to firmly grab the other wheel on a LSD, you can still spin it when the other side is stationary. there is just a good amount of resistance.

hope that helps with the visuallization a little bit

eh, not really. i've wheeled plenty people who have open, locked, and limited slip diffs.....they all perform very differently.

well in the video you posted, your lsd was acting like an open diff, which is why you were working the brake. I agree they perform differently, but in a situation like that, lsd is as useful as an open diff.

in that situation, yes, just like an open. the brake technique does work better with the LS though. 3 wheeling against a wall is a pretty tough spot though. there are numerous other off road situations where an open diff will spin and a Limmited slip will power both wheels and be fine. sand, mud, snow, etc is where it does great. it's the wheel off the ground thing where you're in trouble and a locker is needed.

Thanks for the information man! But someone mentioned pushing the brake pedal down as well (I'm on my BlackBerry, so I can't quote ugh.)

I've tried using the main brakes before, but that didn't seem to work as well as the parking brake, my guess is because ABS has something to do with it? My understanding is that ABS doesn't work on the parking brake.

This is my first vehicle with Part time 4WD. I've got the 4cyl SR5 with no LSD or ATRAC. This little trick might come in handy sometime. I'll keep it in mind. Appreciate the post! Bump Rep!

PS: Guess an old dog can learn new tricks...if I remember to keep an open mind.;)

If you do the parking break thing enough times you will notice 2 things:
    1. It works really well if one (the left or right) is spinning but not so well on the other. this is because the parking break always works better on one tire so if its the one spinning it will slow it down and make the other engage, but if its the one that was stationary its really not going to help u out in this situation.
    2. it can really help with the smoothness of the takeoff, this will lead to the tire getting the maximum amount of traction before it starts to spin.

just remember this will only help to free a vehicle and will do nothing to help you drive across ice at speed.

btw the taping the real break thing works amazing on landrovers with stability control, it makes you give it like 2 times the amount of gas but its like being locked front and rear.
