They are ever so slightly different. I've had a couple of other vehicles that had valet keys; and when I bought my truck I figured out that the grey valet was pointless; however, it reminded me to check out my wife's sienna that she had just bought used; sure enough, it had a valet key which is only useful with the glove box.

So tell me. If our trucks don't have a glovebox lock, what's the difference in the black key and the gray key other than color. Someone said they both have a transponder (which a valet would need) and we don't have locks on the glovebox; what gives?

Not only will the valet key not open your glovebox, but it won't open the trunk either!

When I bought my 1990 Mustang 5.0 convertible I asked the sales man what the switch was for in the rear speakers grilles. He told me they turned the sound up or down.
They were for the rear windows. If they don't know they make it up.

In order to copy any of the three keys you must have the code printed on the little key chain. My was attached to the valet key.

All the keys are cut the same. The two black key have the chip in them and will start the truck. The grey key doesn't have the chip, so it will only unlock the doors, but it wont start the truck.

not true. Hold them up and examine the tip of the keys. They are different.

Yes the tip is different. I tried it in the air bag on/off and they all worked. I thought it might be for the bag. Then using the grey one I started and drove to work no RPM cut out or anything I could tell.

I've been waiting 3-1/2 years for my Toyota racing hat the dealer promised me. It must be real special, they've been working on it a long time.

Wrong. All of the keys have the transponder. The valet key gets used a lot of times for remote starters. The chip gets stuck to the steering column so the truck will start remotely without a key in the ignition.
The purpose of a valet key in a car is to allow a valet to start your car but not have access to the trunk or glovebox. Obviously that isn't the case with our Tacomas. It's just a spare key.

Yeah, sorry I gave the wrong info. Just checked the manual. All keys have the transponder chip for engine immobilizer (assuming your truck has this system) However, only the black keys can be used to make duplicates. Thats what the book said anyway.

There is another situation, but I haven't tested the notion yet. On a Corvette the valet key will not allow you to smoke the tires over. It limits you to about 120 of the 400 available horsepower. (as I recall)

I wonder if the Taco vallet key does this as well?

(My 09 will smoke 'em pretty easily.)

So here's the $24,000 question. Without the window sticker, how would one know if their truck has the engine immobilizer installed? I HATE that big fat key and I'd LOVE to have a smaller, more compact key in my pocket. And I really don't know if I have the Engine Immobilizer system or not. I certainly don't remember anything like that at purchase.
