Well, I've noticed lately that there is a rotten egg/crappy kinda smell comming out of my truck. I smell it through my air vents somewhat, and it usually is the worst after I accelerate hard. My buddies that drive behind me can smell it too, even with their windows up. I called up my local yota dealer and he said that that cats could be bad. Im like wtf? My truck is 3 years old and has just a hair over 20K on her. I put a Gibson cat-back on her a few weeks ago but it was stinky before then too. Any suggestions would be awsome! :D

You're probably not smelling it through your vent unless its the guy in front of you.

it IS your catalytic converter... no doubt about it. Your friends aren't smelling a dead bird in your air vents.

3 years old or not. it had some bad plugs in it at some point, bad exhaust valve, bad sensor somewhere, put leaded gas in it or some other additives it didn't like... (sea foam?). Or even put a non oem intake or exhaust on the vehicle without getting it tuned properly (which is next to impossible to do anyway).

They'll burn through just about anything but bad combustion and leaded gas.

Doesn't make anything better having aftermarket noise makers on there.

Its shot, it might stay stinky for a long long time before it clogs, and I have heard of, though do not endorse, some shade tree remedies for cleaning them. THere were even a couple products out there (fuel additives) at some point that would either clean up your catalytic converter or melt it trying.

Yep the rotten egg smell usually means the catalytic converter is clogging up. Have you noticed any power loss or sluggishness?

Do you have a stick? Clutch kind of smells like rotten eggs when it's burning up.

There may not be anything wrong with the cat. Most of them stink after hard acceleration even when they are working perfectly.

I remember once I had a regulator blow, and my battery was overcharging...I could smeel major rotten egg smell driving down the highway...pulled over, popped the hood and my battery was bubbling and steaming away...limped to a gas station and they had to hose it down...said it could have blown up...

Well, its not a stick, the battery is fine and as for the power, I can't tell because the exhaust and removal of the secondary air filter is new to me. So it feels like it has more power. So hopefully it is covered under warrenty still. If not, im thinking some headers and just keeping the crappy cats untill I need a smog. :D

There's a TSB (for Hyundai) that talks about the Ethanol content of gas- there's an egg-smell, but no fix. Cats are fine, but the ethanol makes a nasty smell. Maybe it's the gas you're using. It's not common for a 3 yr old cat to go bad, though it could happen...
