Got a 2010 V6 taco TRD. When slowing down (or stopping) to put her in 4WD, she does fine. When I switch back into 2 WD, it takes a second, then I hear (and feel) a distinct 'clunk' from the front. Just turned 12K miles on her, but I don't ever remember this until recently. Also, when I am in 4WD, turning the wheels all the way to either side and then I let the clutch out, the front wheels seem to be in a 'diff-lock' mode. In other words, one of the front wheels will be skidding a little...like the rears do when locked in. When one is in 4WD, that doesn't diff lock the front axle does it?
    Any help appreciated

are you doing this on highway?? turning while in 4wd will cause it to bind. that's a no-no.

the clunk is the 4wd disengaging....

both are normal and one is wrong.

dude, its normal to hear a "clunk" when disengaging 4wd when you are stopped, try disengaging at above 30mph, the "clunk" should be gone.

when in 4wd, steering will feel like it is limited -its normal. Youre not supposed to be 4wd on the pavement anyway (I assume youre on pavement, you will not "skid" on loose gravel, sand or mud). When in 4wd on the mud, gravel or sand, then it will feel much better.

Mine does that too. It's normal. Sometime it disengages without making that sound though. Always put it in neutral first, at least that's what I do.

thanks for all the replies so quickly. I had pulled out my boat from my back yard (dirt), then on to pavement. That was when I realized I was in 4wd. Then I immediately switched to 2 wd. I don't make a habit of 4 wd on pavement.I;ll try a couple of the other suggestions also. Isn't 30 mph pretty fast to be going in 4 WD?

I've done 80mph in 4wd. But that was soft dirt/sand.

Mine as well. I also flip into neutral if i remember or can just to take any pressure of things when disengaging. Definitely 4x4 on dry clean blacktop = bad.

I have pulled the trailer out of the back yard and ended up on drive way in 4x4 and yes clunk when disengage. OOPS
