If some tick and some don't what we have here is inconsistent manufacturing practice.
For Toyota to say the ticking is normal directly implies that those that own Toyota's that do NOT tick have an issue and better get to the dealer.

My dealer said I have a problem in the engine, the DSM said it is normal......

Maybe...but you're leaving at least two other sources of variation out of that equation: the human factor, and The Tick.

You have a group of people with varying experience with motor vehicles and engines, with varying personalities (some folks whine about the sun coming up in the morning), even varying hearing ability.

The Tick...is your tick, my tick? Is my tick, his tick? How loud is his, compared to yours, compared to mine? Coming from same place, during same conditions, etc etc?? Could people possibly be hearing different things?

You've seen threads where slews of folks isolated the switching module and say it eliminated their tick, and you advised folks that it doesn't work and to not try it. Why? It worked for other folks, why not try it?

Even those guys aren't in agreement, and their directly observing your truck, and are theoretically experienced with what they are doing. You should have let the dealer do the repairs, when they first offered to.

Printed this ticking issue out and brought it to the dealer this am, they asked me where i got it, told them a tacoma forum. They laghfed and said ok next friday bring it in and we will replace your manifolds. I was like thats it? Girl says yea. Nice so now the anoying exhaust tick will be gone and my truck wont sound like my 86 s-10 2.8 with 400,000 miles. Wow this truck and the service is amazing. My g/f is going to buy a prerunner now because of the service alone.

whoa whoa whoa, so yea i just logged on to see if anyone had posted any cool threads, just to read. well then i saw this thread and decided why not take a look. so what is goin on here guys. ticking noises near driver side wheel at idle. do i have this correct. i looked at the TSB report and it said 2005-2006 tacoma if i am not mistaken. But now i am reading that 2007 might have this problem. so do they. does anyone have a 2007 tacoma and have this problem. i just bought my about a month ago, with 2500k on it. i never heard anything but you know how it is, you never hear until someone else notices. so basically what i am asking is do any of you all with 2007 have this problem.

Wow. This is still alive. I have long sold my noisy Tacoma. I did consider however buying a 2007 FJ. Same engine right? Because the FJ I listened to for the better part of 2 hours did NOT tick. As far as i'm concerned the 2007 4.0 V6 in the Tacoma's are defective.

hey guys, so yea i went out to check on my taco, and i really dont know what sound i am looking for. yea yea i know a ticking sound. i let the truck idle and i tried to listen for some kind of ticking....nothing. then i pushed down on the gas to see if the ticking would get louder....nothing. so then i just put my ear up to my driver side wheel and listened. now is this some kind of obvious ticking like on a second hand clock but louder and faster and easily heard or is it something discrete that i have to really listen for? by the way i have a 2007 V6 Tacoma 4x4.

Manofs: settle down dude, your fine. I have the 07 V6 and its fine. First of all, the tick is not at all uncommon with toyota trucks/suv's. secondly, some people have the tick, some dont. I personally do not have a ticking noise. after reading about it i tried to listen to it with the hood open, standing next to it, in a drive through next to a wall.... nothing. if you have to strain to notice it, then its not there, you're just looking for a problem that you're afraid you might have. If you have the tick its obvious. if you have to crawl under your truck and stick your head in the wheel well just to hear something that sounds like a second hand.... you dont have it. So no need to worry.

GT88: i'm sorry you had all those problems with your truck but i dont think you can say that the 2nd gen V6 is defective based on one truck. Maybe yours was, thats definately a possibility. but you are a VERY small fraction of people that are unhappy with these motors. The dealer should have handled your case very differently but they didnt and that sucks, but i dont think there is anything wrong with these engines

usually the only time i hear mine is when iim going through a drive thru and the window is down and i'm getting the reflection off the wall. it really doesnt bother me. if it blows in under 100k, they'll replace it for me

    Hi ND,
That was my fight with Toyota all along. They fed us a line of $hit saying it was injectors....Clearly it is not if some tick and some don't, unless there are some carburetters on some Tacomas;)

It is either improperly adjusted or improperly machined lifter components. I listened to a 100% Japanese made FJ it it was dead silent, same engine.

its like an old typewriter pop up the hood and from the front it seems like its coming from the right side of the engine when your in front of the hood. it gets louder when you rev the engine. dealer said it was injectors posts in toyota nation said it was the way a module was mounted so i dont know anymore. i have an 04 dbl cab 2wd trd sport.

Well if you like it i say you go ahead and get an FJ. I love those things!!! i looked at them very seriously for a while and there's still that little voice in my head that says i should have gotten the all black limited edition TRD model i was looking at. I definately think you should get one. If you end up getting one drop into TW from time to time to let us know how you like it and keep us updated. Later GT88 :)
