My use of 4x4 on the highway has nothing to do with keeping moving. Its about keeping the rear wheel drive vehicle with light rear end from fishtailing with the POS stock tires. With the truck in 4x4 I'm fine going at the same speeds I'd take the road in a front wheel drive car.

Dont shift into 4hi going faster than 55mph, its that simple. I dont get some of the people who believe that 4hi does not help maintain control on slick roads, to me that's absurd. I live in the snow 6 months out of the year and promise that 4hi is a huge help on hilly, icy, windy slick roads.
Seems my Offroad with the locker isn't as good as a vehicle with LSD in the rear when its slick either...from a complete stop on the ice the backend is so light you really have to ease the throttle to get moving, otherwise the pass. rear tire just peels out......but in the summer that locker is SWEET!!!:D

Oh yeah, and in the winter YOU try driving all across Wyoming/Montana/Nevada/Idaho on the ice while going under 55 in 4hi. Your in for one hell of a long drive. The fastest I have gone in 4hi is 75mph and that was for about 500 miles. Just hit 78K and no issues with my pickup.

That was confusing. Stop before in or out of 4Lo, Keep in under 60 in or out of 4HI to or from 2HI

Yes, hence why I said the Pass. rear tire peels out in my truck with a locker. I understand the function of a locker 100% compared to LSD.

well then your traction needs, require 4wd to keep going in a straight line. if you are having issues fishtailing in 2wd its probably dumb to put it in 4wd so you can go faster. God forbid you need to stop or swerve to avoid something. 4wd does not give you lateral stability

Most people who deal with snow prepare for it. 200# in the back and better than stock tires are a given when dealing with snow.

Maybe add to: truck with locker, "when un-locked" to erase confusion?

When you trade in for a newer Tacoma, you will enjoy the TRAC and AUTO LSD in 2WD functions (to say nothing of the enhanced 4WD traction with TRAC in H4 and A-TRAC in L4) plus the rear locker is still there, too!

Actually, I am glad that my pickup does not have any of the added traction features of the newer tacomas. When my buddy bought a new tacoma Offroad in 09, we went wheeling here in wyoming and both trucks proved almost the same on a variety of terrain, with his truck making all kinds of awful noises while in a-trac because of the brakes kicking in all the time. There has never been a hill or anything else he can do that I cannot. Even he admitted that trac/atrac does not do that much, just makes certain things a little easier.
I like the challenge of tire placement and brake/throttle control while offroading. My girlfriend could really use the extra help of trac/atrac though!!!....BTW, I HATE the ABS in these trucks!!!!! I hate the sound of it kicking in even more.
I would rather just put a locker in the front, but that will be after I get a new daily driver.

Understood... I am old school as to driving off road, but can tell you that without paying for a front locker add on, the A-TRAC gives you that kind of traction... and you can turn it off with a push of the button, so don't understand why the complaint.

I also have burried the truck in sand (on purpose) with open differentials (VSC OFF MODE) in 4WD, but tires at 32 psi... and the A-TRAC was then engaged and my truck climbed out of the holes it dug and I didn't have to get out and clear away sand or let any air out.

Another time, I backed into a pair of deep ruts so that my rear tires were both in the air, I was pointed uphill and might have had only one good tire in front on firm ground... the A-TRAC pulled my truck out... amazing technology!

You have to be really off road to appreciate traction control... lockers or A-TRAC... it may save your hide someday!

You can turn Lockers on/off with the push of a button as well.

You dont think I'm ever REALLY offroad??? Come out to Wyoming and see how offroad you can get. You'll realize you aint in Cali no more when you dont see a soul for a week while out camping and offroading. And honestly, if it comes down to Lockers or traction control saving my hide, I am a dumbass for trying to go there in the first place....Unless I have a partner with a 4x4 to help pull me out. When your over a hundred miles in offroad in a huge state with around 500K people living in it, you dont depend on lockers or traction control to "save your hide."

Like I said, I dont want the extra traction options. Why??
    1. More to break on my pickup\
    2. I hate the noise it makes
    3. Test after test with my buddies 09, trac/atrac made no difference in what he could do compared to my pickup.
    4. I like lockers
    5. No 4x4 I have ever owned had traction control and they were all that I needed to get where I was going. (My 79 f 150 had Detroit air lockers front and rear and it was unstoppable though)
    6. I am perfectly happy with my 2006 tacoma

I just realized that I was responding to David K, God of Atrac. I have been on this forum every now and then in the last few months and have read some of this guys totally out there ATRAC comments. Sorry for totally going off topic on a thread that is about engaging 4hi.
David, I know that you like your pickup and ATRAC but seriously man, nobody cares.

I am not confused by it, I rather refuse to have my IQ lowered and be a victim of clever sales man pitches. :D
You would understand that, if your only mechanical skill was not to, call Toyota's Service dept for everything.
