Tire question with 3"OME lift, 285/75/16

I'll be putting on a 3" OME lift kit soon on my 09 Dbl cab and bumping up to a bigger tire now that the ragged trails are on their wear bars. I'm hoping for 285/75/16 on my stock wheels. I like the stock wheels and will just paint them black. I don't mind a little bit of plastic fender liner trimming and know it's required, but I can't seem to find exactly where to trim after a night or two of browsing TacomaWorld.

Will the 285/75/16 tire fit on this combo ON the stock wheels or will I need to buy wheels too? What about the TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) too.

I'm trying to plan the budget and don't want the 'you need new wheels for that to work' speech without seeing it coming.

I'd like to use this thread to answer these questions and illustrate where the trimming is required, or at least links to it.

There isn't a single way to trim. It changes a bit based on alignment. You should be able to tell pretty quickly where you need to take some more plastic off tho. Take little bits at a time and try it out. Take more off if you need to.

 

My son's 07 Dbl Cab TRD 2WD had 275-75-16 on it when we bought it used, no rubbing. I put the OME 3" kit on and he is planning on 285's soon. No problem on his truck with clearance.

The issue is whether you have too much backspacing and the tires will rub the UCAs. If they do the only alternative is new rims or wheel spacers.

i have a 2009 and i have a 3in leveling kit and im running 285/75 16 with stock rims i had to get 2.5in wheel spacers because the tire was rubbing on the upper control arm at full turn

 

Is that 2.5" per wheel or total backspace.

To clarify, I interpret your response as a total backspacing of 5 inches of additional track width, not. 2.5". Is this correct?

Just trying to clarify before I start ordering stuff.

It's fairly common for folks to run 1.25" spidertrax wheel spacers.

I can't imagine a 2.5" wheel spacer.

 

I have an OME 3 in lift on my truck with 285/75/16. I bought new rims and tires at the same time. They rub a little when I have the wheel cocked all the way to the right or left. You shouldn't have any problems with the stock rims. If they do rub a nice set of wheel spacers should fix it no problem.

 

Figured 2.5 was it, 5" of additional track width seems a bit obnoxious. Plus, I could not find 2.5" thk spacers.


How wide are the stock wheels? Anyone know? 285/75/16 spec out a 7.5-9" wheel.
