Just bend it backward 90* at the roofline, you will get the needed clearance and still have radio reception. But if you care about appearance or image, you might want to follow the other advice here.

although this was a year ago, I'm not getting how to take the ball part off. I was looking at mine and it looks as if the ball end is part of the antenna entirely.

It does look like it's a part of the antenna but will come off with some "coaxing". I used an adjustable wrench and closed it down till it was just larger than the shaft of the antenna and the tapped it against the ball and it came off. Cut to length and then press ball back on.

I just took 14 inches off my stock antenna, I live in rural Tennessee and I don't notice any signal loss. If you are concerned about controlling your ball, just place your pliers around your antenna, wrap the pliers and the ball with a little electrical tape and tap the pliers with a hammer. Decide the length you want your antenna to be and wrap the antenna with one or two turns of electrical tape and cut it off with either a dremel or a hack saw. Cut the wire wrapped around the antenna first, about a quarter inch below where you intend to cut, using a pair of diagonal cutters ("dikes"). You will have to file the antenna a little to get the ball to fit on again (I used my dremel with a grinding stone). Taper the end of the antenna so it slides into the ball. When you have the fit you want, add a little epoxy or superglue in hole in the ball and slide it on. I added a little glue to the wire wrapped around the antenna to ensure it doesn't come loose. Touch up with a little flat or satin black paint and it will look OEM, which it is.

It comes off! Take a crescent wrench, bigger is better. Close it down so that it rides over the antenna but won't clear the ball. Slide it down (forcefully) along the antenna over and over again until the ball pops off, preferably into a bag or box so that it doesn't go flying somewhere where you won't find it. Then cut the antenna down (I took 8" off of mine with no loss in reception) and epoxy the ball back on. Simple and free...

I have one from autozone, 15" I think.

Whatever you get, make sure it bends. Ask me how I know...
