Spare Tire Rattle

Been having a rattle over bumps and found it to be the little silver piece in the middle of the spare tire hanger...



Cannot see anywhere to tighten it up. Anyone have any ideas?

 

check owners manual, it should show you how to lower and tighen your spare tire.

 

Sounds to me like you just need to raise the spare tire a little more and compress the spring.

 

The spare tire and the "wings" on the lift are very tight. But I will try lowering and raising to see if that helps.

 

Did not work. It is like it will not tighten enough to compress the spring all the way. The crank only goes so far and then slips out when it gets real hard to turn.

 

sounds like the system is working properly, good to have alittle play in the spring

if the noise is a problem, maybe cut out a old thick rubber floor mat

and sitck it between the metal to stop the noise

 

I have figured I could make it stop with something. However, I do not think it is working as designed since it is making so much noise.

 

Finally got sick of the rattle so I took it to the dealer since it is still under warranty. They simply flipped the spare tire over and no more rattle.

I received the truck with the spare tire facing up but apparently it needs to be facing down to completely compress the spring.

 

Doesn't jive with what I read. I seem to recall folks saying that the stock setup has the valve stem in the wrong direction (up), thereby making filling it a royal PITA.

 

That is what I thought too. Mine is an 09. Did they change it?

 

what did you end up doing to get the rattle to stop? im headed to the dealership to have them give me a couple of the washers to put up in the shroud, we will see if that stops my rattle trap!!!

 

He flipped the spare tire so the valve stem is pointed down.

 

Yes, the spare tire flip mod.

 

The flip did not help completely. I ended up just taking the tube looking piece of metal off. No more rattle.

 

Yeah, the flip trick did nothing for me accept make it a PAIN IN THE ASS to lift back up, tire is then off balance and wants to flip over. I did the same thing, took that washer out and then removed the shroud so that the spring is exposed, NO MORE RATTLE!!!!!!

i may cut some plastic in the shape of the washer and see if i cant make the shroud fit snug against the spare but for now it stays off the truck
