    Looking to Buy!
    Hey Everyone!

My father brought this to my attention and I wanted to see how valid this was...

I am looking at purchasing the 16" alloys my Tacoma, when I purchase it (hopefully soon!! :D) At some point I would like to do some off roading, probably nothing too extreme because this truck will not just be a toy, it's my daily driver.

My dad's contention is that the alloys are a waste of money because they will not hold up to off roading and that steel wheels are the way to go. They are cheaper (which I believe is truly fueling his argument with me) and that you can just hammer them back into place if you bend a steel wheel.

I don't want to buy different wheels in the future, so buying great looking aftermarket isn't an option right now. So how many of you guys still have the stock wheels (steel or alloys) on your rig and how have they held up to off roading/daily abuse?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Alloys handle fine as long as you don't abuse them. It's driver mentality that determines their life.

the large majority of people use alloys and they hold up just fine offroad. They are lighter which is great for a daily driver. A high quality durable steel wheel when only be worth it for a deticated trail rig IMO

I felt the majority of casual off roaders on here kept the stock alloys. Thanks!

ya the stock wheels will work fine until you want to go to a bigger tire. Then usually an aftermarket wheel with less backspacing is required which makes the wheel stick out a little further.

Its hard to find steel wheels that fit over the calipers on the 05+. If your really worried get some used wheels and use those for off-road. as long as you dont mind swapping wheels before wheeling. it will also save you gas if you run highway tires daily and off road tires when you wheel.

Not true. The alloys hold up just fine to off roading.

    1. If you are hard enough to bend steel wheels, you are really getting extreme.

    2. You can not just hammer out bent wheels with enough precision to make them useable, they will vibrate.

I think his contention with the bent wheel was more like hitting a severe pothole or something. But that is an interesting point about hammering it back into place!

Foglights are for fog, not oncoming traffic!
My factory alloys, with moderate offroad use look like they have skin rot all over.
Shitty, flaking alloys are a gen2 hallmark.
Don't buy factory, if you have to have alloy.
To me, steel wheels mean serious user.
    Alloys say bling.

    completely stock
i bought a set of trd rims. they are getting pretty beat. they are too "flush" and prone to getting hit. recessed wheels are better all the way around
