yea ok that is what i thought i had, 4x4 with open diff. ok so u are sayin that really 4x4 is only good for going straight with open diff. that is crappy for them to put that on there and no locks.how cheap . this is why my left spun like crazy and i did not get out because the rt had no torque. so if front end is open diff even in 4whlldrive, then why should i not get locks on front. to turn off when on street of course? why do u suggest the rear? what im sayin is, with lockrite in back then in my situation how would that have done me good being as the front end is soo heavy and the rear was higher in this case with less traction.

POWERTRAX® TRACTION SYSTEMS is what lockrite offers also. it seems best for me, plus no clutches to burn out. wow. but i dont think they have it for our year trucks.

If you have an open diff in the rear, its much better to install an auto locker in it than the front, as the front is more prone to breakage when locked. Its ok to stick a part time locker in the front, i.e. ARB, but you need to disengauge it when on pavement.

Is there an "LSD" sticker on the rear diff? OR Find the axel code on your door jamb. he code wil be something like this: B03C. will be the ring gear size, the 2 numbers are the gear ratio, and the last letter will indicate weather or not it is LS. The code should be near the lower right side of the info sticker, near your V.I.N. number.

only other numbers there other then tire load psi are, 3 other numbers, a ctr number , an atm number and a truck number.
ctr - 209/FA13

This is it. "A" at the end indicates you have an open diff.

ok i have emails out to POWERTRAX® TRACTION SYSTEMS , to see if they have one for my model tocoma. It does not cost an arm and leg and needs no maintenance , no clutches to worry with or anything. if they dont make it for my year tacoma then i dunno what im going to do. i need something up front to keep one tire from slippin but that i can turn off while on highway. seems to me rear locks wouldnt have helped me in this situation, but maybe i dunno. i mean they would've helped but i dunno if they would;ve gotten me out, im gonna ask them if they have POWERTRAX® TRACTION SYSTEMS for up front to. i didnt know plain 4x4 from toyota was so cheaply made like this. what a jip

Its not "Cheaply made", its just how the system works. You still have power sent to the front wheels, and the regular 4x4 system is more than enough for 95% of the people that use it. And, who knows, even if you were locked front and rear, you still may have gotten stuck.

yea but 4 wheel drive is misleading because u really dont have all 4 tires turning at all times is all im sayin, im almost pretty sure that if that rt tire would've had torque i could've gotten out backwards..

yea so obvioulsy we have the cheapest 4 wheel drive system there is basically(open diff in 4 wheel drive), since my rt tire did not turn and the left tire just spun like crazy in the mud and soon just made a water hole on left side. .
but this leads me to another question. on our trucks, when 4 wheel drive is not engaged. are the front wheels disconnected from the front differential, half-shafts (the shafts that connect the differential to the hub) and driveshaft.?

-- this is why i got stuck, and why i need locks or something that would've applied torque to the rt front tire.
i still dont see why everyone says rear diff locks are better when these trucks are so heavy up front?
can limited slip be used when 4 wheel drive is engaged? if i get locks then can they be used with 4 wheel drive engaged or can neither of these be used with 4 wheel drive? i dont understand whats going to happen when i turn on 4 wheel drive but have installed a different differential?

Most of the 4X4 vehicles built have open differentials in both ends. When you go shopping for a 4X4 whatever you have to research what configuration you can get.
Ex..Jeep wranglers has 3 different ways to get differentials
1. Open both ends
2. Tracklock in rear open up ft.
2. Air lockers in both ends.

Tacoma
1. Open both ends
2. LSD in rear
3. Air locker in rear
4. Auto LSD (Smoke and mirrors)

Your ft. axle shafts are directly connected to the hubs/wheels with no provisions to disconnect them.

ok so even when i dont have 4whll drive engaged the front axle is still turning, thus making poor gas mileage?
and i thought locks installed inside the transfer case? at least everything lockrite has does. but i think everything they have only goes up to 2000 year models for our trucks. God 850 for air lockers and then air kit and then installation. i just dont know. i will wait to see what powertrax richmond(lockright) tells me when they email back and then i dunno what im going to do.

ARB or Detroit E-lockers! Thats all you will ever need. LSD is alright, and Open diffs suck. The tire that need the traction always is the dead one not moving, with open diffs. LSD is bad except for when you need equal amount of traction, torque to both tires. Lockers you will never need to worry about getting traction. I would choose a seclectable locker IMHO. That way you wont spend money on new tires every, 500 miles. just my $.02
