Upgrade Battery stuff

Hi all,

In anticipation of my dual-battery install I went out and purchased an Optima D31 Marine battery which is both a starting and a deep cycle battery.
  • Cold Cranking Amps (CCA at 0 deg.F) 900
  • Reserve Capacity (RC) 155 min.

It actually fits in the stock location but I will have to get a different clamp and tray.
It is currently in, but the tie down I have in there does not look sufficient for 4-wheeling.
I will look at some better options soon.

Any way my question is has anyone found a circuit in the factory fuse box that is alway "hot". I would like to be able to leave my Engel fridge running w/o the key in the ignition.

I may just purchase another fusebox since I will need one anyway for the dual-battery install and wire it to the current Optima.

I will submit some pics when my better half gets back from Santa Barbara with our Tacoma.

Yeah, I know... Old thread... You ever get the dual battery setup done? I want to do that at some point, but haven't fully planned it out yet.

I wish I could say it was done but we currently have 4 different Toyotas so progress is always slow.

Anyway I will begin the process pretty soon. I know I want to wire it similiar to my FJ Cruiser but I still have not figured out a good place for the second battery.

Let me know when you are starting your project and maybe we can bounce some ideas off each other.

Will do! I've seen a couple pics where one lady rotated the battery 90* and was able to fit 2 optimas that way. I forget if she she custom fabbed a tray or not... Lemme see if I can find her post on TS.

Can't find her write up on TS, but it wasn't all that detailed anyway. I found her photobucket pics though so that might help. I was going to figure it out from them anyway since she didn't give much detail in the write up, and hasn't posted in almost 2 years.

My other thought is to do one HUGE battery like an Odyssey.

Anyone know what kind of tray/hold down unit is needed for the Optima battery? I was going to get one, but I don't know about the fit.

I've seen trays made for Optima batteries... Forget where though. Some custom billet ones.

Yeah, it will probably be a point of getting one then messing with it until I get it to fit. I just don't want to buy a hundred battery trays before I get the right one.

Then you don't have the redundancy.

It is nice to be able to kill the Auxillary battery and still have the starting battery to start the truck.

That is the reason for the isolator. Your main battery is always protected.

Yeah, I know. It would take a lot to kill one of those Odysseys, but you still run the risk like you said. I think I may try this setup:

2006 Taco Dual Battery and AUX Fuse Block - TTORA Forum

If you don't have a login to TTORA let me know. I'm going to save the page and pics for later reference incase it disappears before I get around to doing it!

Great write up! I wish I would have seen that before I wired my Fj Cruiser.
My problem is we have the I-4 and it doesn't really seem to have the space for the second battery.
The Tacoma V6 has pretty much the same engine layout as the FJ and the V6 4Runner.

That link does help though. Thanks again!

No problem! I stumbled across it in a tread on TN about a carputer. lol Go figure! I never thought about running one of those smaller Odysseys for accessories, but it sure would make locating it easier. And that fuse box kicks ass! No more inline fuse crap or 15 eye rings on the battery terminal!
