Maint Reqd Light Just Came on

Hi,
My Maint Reqd light just came on at 26681 miles. I bought this 2007 Tacoma last week and am wondering if this is just for an oil change or is it the sign of something else? i.e. Do I need to hook up and OBD code reader and find out what tripped the light to come on.

I've read that usually it's an oil change reminder light, but my question is what activates the light to come on for an oil change? Is it activated by an odometer reading, i.e after the light is reset it's set to come on 4000 miles later. Or is there a sensor that can tell the oil is dirty and it's time to change it?

Pretty sure it's just mileage...cause you have to reset to make it go off...even if you swapped clean oil in.

To add (just looked)...It should start flashing about 4500 miles from the last reset and go solid 5000 miles.
