Dealer to install re-manufactured transmission in new truck

Hi all just looking for opinions on replacing my transmission in my 2010 tacoma (3000 miles on vehicle) with a re-manufactured unit. The dealer says these units are better than new.

 

I had a Kia years ago, tranny died with 461 miles on it. Dealer wanted to put a reman in it. Called a lawyer, he said refuse to take the car back until there is a new one in it. I did. Got my NEW tranny but had to wait until one was shipped in (about 2 weeks). Putting a reman in a new car is going to lower its resale value instantly.

 

I agree! I would not accept the Reman tranny. Nothing but trouble can come from it. New tranny = New warranty coverage. No hidden language on warranty!

 

F-that, go new on a truck that new. If was an older truck it'd be a different story but a new truck should have new parts unless they want to extend their powertrain warranty for you (if you plan to keep the vehicle past the current warranty, if not it doesn't do you any good).

 

Agreed with all above. A rebuilt in my new vehicle under warranty would be a no-go. Fight them.

 

I agree that new sounds better than remanufactured - but let's look at the whole picture.

Who's doing the reman?

On the other hand - Toyota is on the verge of shutting down production on their assembly lines for want of parts due to the earthquake/tsunami.

Supposing the dealer did agree to put in a new one. How long do you think it'll take before one becomes available? How long do you want to be without your truck?

Someone said that it will shorten your warranty. I find that statement highly unlikely - given that it's being put in by the dealer as part of a warranty repair in the first place.

FWIW ... my transmission went out on my new 2007 Tundra (summer of 2007) with 500 miles and the dealer put in a new transmission ... gave me a loaded Camry to drive while in the shop (3 days) ... and the Toyota Corp gave me a Platinum waranty for my troubles.

Now, this was when the Tundras came out and Toyota wanted to keep their nose clean.

From reading a lot of these threads on ... "Toyota Warranty Issues" .... Toyota Corp. is slipping. .... a lot ....

All dealers in this area (albany NY) are not created equal and maybe they are trying to hose you.

I'd be fuming mad at the suggestion of a rebuilt on such a new vehicle.

 

If it's "better than new" tell them to double your powertrain warranty

 

Why do you need a new transmission on a new truck...what happened?

 

If they are wanting to put in a remain, that must mean they can't get you a new one. So they are giving you an option to get your truck back in a normal time or wait ever how long for Toyota to build new ones. In the end it depends on how long you can go without the truck. As I bet they will not loan you a car for X number of weeks.

 

I would ask how a reman trans is better than a new one.

Thanks for all of the replies. I talked to my nephew who is local mechanic and he says that re-manufactured is the standard on big ticket items with a lot of car dealers. I do have the 100,000 platinum warranty but it wont hurt to check what Toyota policy is on this. I will post what I find out.
