Supercharge my TACO or buy a Tundra??

Newbie to TACO world, life long Toyota driver....
I recently bought a 27' Camping trailer (4600lbs dry weight, 5800 Loaded) and the Taco definitely feels it when pulling it. I need just a bit more horsepower to pull it up the mountain. Should I fork out the $$$ to supercharge, or just trade er' in and get the Tundra? I noticed the Tundra doesn't have that much more towing capability then the TACO (7200 lbs???)
I have a 2008 Long bed Crew cab SR5 TACO with the 6500# towing package.
Has anyone had any towing experience with a supercharger? or a Tundra?

I don't believe I am exceeding the towing capacity at 5800.. correct me if I am wrong..

 

Id go for the tundra myself. LOOOVVVEEEE my tacoma, but Id take the tundra in that case

Its not just power. Ive got a supercharger and yeah, with the supercharger it still helps making towing the boat up the mountains easier and theres tons more power over stock, but its still just as painful going back down with 4k pounds behind you on you otherwise normal truck. Not only that but the extra weight the tundra has must be nice to keep you planted on the ground when towing.

I love my Taco and am currently looking for a Travel Trailer. If I go over 4100 - 4200 dry (and about 5500 wet + cargo) I'm gonna have to upgrade to a Tundra.

Power is nice, but just like the quote says, can you stop it going down hill? Personally, I wish I could go with rear disc brakes on my taco, I think it would help alot when towing (especially with no trailer brakes), but anytime you're towing something that's heavier than your tow vehicle you gotta consider stopping power.

I know right where you're at on this and I'd be torn as well. I just need to find a TT under my weight limit is all, I don't wanna give up my Taco.

 

The 5.7 tundra is rated for over 10,000lbs idk where you got 7200 from lol.

Unless you weren't talking about the 5.7

 

Exactly. I didn't skimp on the controller for that reason. Stopping is not the problem, its pissing everyone off behind me up the hills...impatient Colorado drivers..

 

Small Truck, but with a payload rated @ 6500lbs (w/V-6 and towing package)- your leaning towards the max tow rating, so if your hauling this load long distances and or frenquently, get a bigger truck.
I feel your pushing it trying to tow close to capacities with small trucks long distances- if your towing a larger boat to the ramp nearby, or a large trailer a short distance no biggy, but long distances I am going with a larger truck.

 

Hell, Colorado drivers are much nicer then cali drivers and most of the time better.

I would get a super charged 5.7L Tundra. 500HP baby!!!!!

J/K. I've towed (flat towing) my Brother's Jeep wrangler which is probably over 3500lbs. It does 75 up a hill that was probable 8%+. Needless I won't be doing that again. Stopping takes a while, but thats with only the truck's breaks since the Jeep is not on a trailer. I would just get another Transmission cooler in addition to the tow package one.

 

I went through the same debate as you did. I wanted more power for towing and more room (I had an access cab). I was going to get the 5.7 Tundra as well, I was looking at them, test drove them. Then I went on a business trip and was able to rent one. After the test drive I decided the Tundra was to much truck. Bigger than I needed and harder to drive than my tacoma. Plus I didnt like that i couldnt get it in a manual. The truck just was to big to manuver around, and i honestly had no need for a full sized truck, jsut a truck with more power.
So after that I traded my 05 AC for a 2010 DCSB with a S/C, CAI,and cat back exhaust and I couldnt be happier. I regularly tow a enclosed 12ft trailer and a 5K lb boat and the taco pulls it like a beast. No issues at all. Just be warned, your milage will go down with the super charger, even without towing. I average 14mph right now. Thats mixed driving in fairly hilly type areas (PNW). Towing a heavy load will probably drop it into single digits.
