Sorry if this question has already been answered but I searched and searched and came up blank. I want to upgrade my suspension and I'm considering a drop bracket lift. Why does Pro Comp suggest 17 to 20 inch wheels at least 8 inches wide? They also talk about backspacing and I know if the backspacing is wrong the wheel/tire will rub the spindle but that's the extent of my knowledge.

My truck has the 16 inch SR5 alloy wheels and I would like to keep them. I also installed Spidertrax 1.25 inch wheel spacers to push the tires out. My question is this: Will the 6 inch Pro Comp or Fabtech drop braket kits work with my wheels and spacers? Whats are the pros and cons of each kit? They look pretty similar to me. If these won't work, are there any other kits that will work with the stock wheels?

I believe they recommend 17s because 16s will hit the steering knuckle, even with wheel spacers. There are several other threads on this same topic, I'm just going from memory of those.

Wow. Must be a beefy knuckle with the wheel 1.25 inches further away and still hitting.

A local shop told me I'd have to get 17 or 18 inch wheels with right backspacing for that kit as well. The reason they gave me was the knuckles and brake calipers won't fit into the smaller wheels. Luckily, I found out about spindles for my prerunner instead of getting a fabtech or procomp. I've heard some no so good things about those kits

Well it was from people on here who had 'em. Most of it was just horror stories of improper installations though, or from people that beat the hell out of them offroad and had stuff break. If i had a 4x4 I'd be all over those kits to be honest, but since I have a Prerunner, it just seems to be the smarter route to go spindles + 2 inch shocks for a 6 incher.

Spindles are by far the best route for a prerunner!

I agree! Hey with your 6 inch lift, were you able to fit 35's no problem? I'm running 285's now but they are just 32's, and i'd want to go up to 35 after I get my lift. You regear?

No problems but I did trim quite a bit and without the sway bar I hit the body mount flexing off road...

I'd imagine the first gen vs. second gen kits are considerably different.....

Do you think 16's would have fit if you spaced them out 1.25 inches?

I agree. I had a set of CST spindles on my Frontier and was happy with them but now I have 4x4 so that's not an option. I do have full confidence that a drop bracket kit would work fine for my needs though.

6" Pro Comp Stage II lift, Running boards, tint, Tuxedo LoPro QT tonneau, Flowmaster 50 series single in/dual out, aFe Pro Dry S, EGR in-channel wind deflectors.
not to make your decision harder but Pro Comp actually suggests 18"+ for tacoma models with VSC....I had 17's before my pro comp stage II lift and ended up selling them and buying 18's.
