I just finished replacing my left front diff bearing in my 2010 Tacoma to fix a growling noise that appeared when I installed my 3" Toytec lift. It took about an hour to do the entire job. I got the bearing from East Coast Gear Supply.
    Problem fixed

unblolt everything thing from the knuckle.. leave the axle nut as is, and remove the rotor.. once everything is free from the knuckle, pop the axle out with a pry bar.

I'm assuming you pulled the cvj axle and hub in one piece? No scoring on your cvj axle?

Is a bit of in and out play along with the up and down movement of the axle normal with this problem? Or could I have something else going on that the bushing will not fix?

Yes normal to an extent...check passenger side to compare "normal."

The CV has play, the problem is the stub shaft into the diff having play as well.

    Swap needle bearing for bushing...profit.

Thanks for the reply, will compare to pass side, I am only asking about play in the stub shaft.

Finished the bushing install and put in Eibachs, 5100s, 1/4" top plate on passenger side, 1/2" top plate on driver's side, and 1.5" 3 leaf pack from wheelers.

Drives as smooth as a baby's bottom and looks awesome. I love East Coast Gear Supply.

Had the dealership change my front diff and cv axle friday(warranty on my '11). No more growl. we'll see how long that lasts!! 12,000 miles, new 3" lift immediate growl, that is rediculous

Any tips on how you got them to do that with a lift? The first time I mentioned it they blamed it on the lift then aftermarket wheels/tires? I would love to have them try that first, but it will come back.

I am about to carry mine to the dealer with my stock tires on. I figure they will deny it due to my coilovers, but I feel if I don't go complain, then they will never consider trying to fix it. If only a few people try, they will never see the real problem. If a lot of people try, maybe one day they will.

After that, I'll be putting my order in for a new bushing.

FWIW; mine was quiet for about 10k miles after having the diff worked on (under warranty), but the growl returned immediately following the first time I used the truck in 4WD. I dreaded pulling it out of 4WD for fear it would be back, and sure enough......

Just got my bushing, tool, and CV axle in the mail yesterday, so, ready for the fix.

^^ Yeah mine is returing I think too. about 7k miles since its been replaced. I can hear and feel something in the left front wheel area. But its not bad enough yet to see if it is indeed the diff. bearing or the wheel bearing. time will tell.
But I will def. be ordered a bushing/tool and axle sooner or later..
    Thanks ECGS!!!!

I tried getting this done with two dealers locally. They said no way with the lift. Called around found one that was known for replacing the diffs with a lift and they said they take a couple measurement and angle readings. But do to this bushing being made I didn't waste my time. Just got the bushing now I just need to get it in.
