Tough to say. I have no headliner, no carpet, mud tires, cut-off exhaust, and am surrounded by metal welded directly to the frame. I actually wear earplugs when I farther than 30 minutes because the constant noise puts me to sleep.

The better to whip people with. :p

I have rebuilt these for a while. I typically cut the shifter down as well. I typically cut these down 1 1/2" which makes it the same height as a TRD SS. I can cut them down as much as 2 1/2".

I use an urethane epoxy to bond the lower assembly to the hollow upper shaft.

Here is a link to XRU that describes the process.

Just FYI, the 4WD shifter is about 1/2" longer than a 2WD.

I have been running this mod for about 2 years with good luck.

Also, a TRD SS has the same problem, it has a rubber bushing inside that also wears out. This mod also works on TRD SS.

If you want one, just PM me.

The dealer stocks bushings. You need to replace the white one on the end of the shaft and the green one that is in the transmission itself. They just pop out. This is very common on Toyota's

My shifter slop was getting exponentially worse over the last few weeks so last night I tackled the issue. I ended up cutting the shifter apart using the link Coupe posted, then taking a piece of steel tube and using it as a sleeve, then I MIG welded the upper and lower parts together and gave it a quick touch up with some black spray paint. After driving the truck for about 35miles of mixed driving today, there doesnt seem to be too much noise(just a slight hiss/whirring that sounds a lot like wind noise) and the shifting is rock solid. With my stereo only on 5-6, the sound is completely masked.

If others have this problem, I will be happy to rebuild your shifter. I typically get $120 (+ your core) for the job and it includes a new tip bushing. This price includes shipping. I usually have a couple in stock.

I will send you a shifter, you swap it out and send me your old shifter.

Mine just started getting "floppy" a couple weeks ago when it was over 100 degrees for a couple days. I was just going to look at it today after I went and got a piece of rod the right size BUT being the Mongo that I am I tore what little of the isolator was left when I was looking at it. So, I went ahead and welded up the rod (would have taken some pictures but I find it hard to pause and take a pic when I am in the heat of battle, plus my welds looked like @ss!).
Got it all back together and man, this is awesome! shifts are just click, click, click. I love it! (oh I should mention I also have the URD short throw kit too)
The only time the is any real noise is above 4000 RPM in 2nd. The rest of the time you have to really listen, with the windows up and stereo off, to hear any extra noise coming from the shifter.
Overall a very well worth it mod.
Thanks to Milton for the thread and the pic!
