Sadly, not nearly as tough as the Toyotas of the 80's.

P.S. What 30K truck these days still comes with rear drum brakes?

As others have said, still the best current choice out there for a mid sized truck.

I owned an '05 X-Runner before recently buying a '10 4X4 Offroad. I can tell you that I put that X-Runner through some serious shit. Some buddies and i drove 20 miles @ 60 MPH in 2nd gear, just to make asses of ourselves. Can't tell you how many burnouts, doughnuts, clutch drops I did, hills I ramped. Hauled way more weight than I should have on an X-runner. While it never quit running on me, I did have several problems with it.

I tore 2nd gear out and had it fixed on warranty twice.
O2 sensors were replaced once, and check engine light was on for them again when I sold it.
Power steering pump went out one night after about the 20th consecutive doughnut.
While I never had a shortage of braking ability, the brakes are definitely small for the truck. Started pulsing before I sold.
Bed cracked at the front while ratcheting down my motorcycle recently. I'm not a fan of the plastic bed.
I too had the squeaky fan, non-working fan control, and the infamous 6-speed problems including my least favorite - the sqeaky throwout assembly.

Despite the problems, I bought another Tacoma. I love this truck, and while I may have to deal with these little annoyances, I'm feel confident this truck will never leave me stranded. Like all the old tacomas I've owned, it's bullet-proof and it will just go and go and go. It will probably outlast me.

Nothing really lasts long when you abuse it, Tacoma or otherwise. Using a knife to cut concrete wont end well.

My experience with the 4x4 DC OR edition has been going well. It has some limitations but so do all vehicles. Somethings that come to mind are: the worlds weakest frame paint, idiotic low hanging exhaust crossover, and low hanging cross member, I am also not a fan of the OEM battery as it seems they like to overheat and spew acid out. I just had mine replaced under warranty.

My truck despite its shortcomings and defects I still love it and it has taken me through many parts of extreme back country, and off road adventures.

Hemi is correct about the locking rear diff: Achilles heel of this truck. But it's a pretty easy fix by swapping to aftermarket gears.

My rear diff. EXPLODED with 90,000 miles on it. I think my son had a lot to do with that though after seeing pieces of rubber on the rear box sides. I believe they are a great truck. Just don't be crazy. Everything has a breaking point.

My 2010 rear diff went with less than 9K miles. May have been user error, but not so sure any more. Other than the frame rusting-out -- I had no problems with my 1st gen through 90K.

    I gotta disagree.....
I had 2 Dodge Dakotas, neither of which drove, handled, stopped, or anything else as nice as either of my Tacomas. But they were tough as nails, powerful, and capable. I

I also had a 2005 Frontier, it rattled a lot, and it's build quality was shit, but it was an exremely tough and quiet powerful.

Both of those trucks went to hell and back, and survived, and the only breakage from all 3 was the exhaust crossover on Dakota#2. It broke from numerous wheelhox / axlewrap / engine banging against the motor mount incidents. But it was provoked by crappy exhaust mods.

This 5 lugger belongs to somebody in my neighborhood. Smacked up from a multi-car accident but it drives just fine. It's pretty funny to see it driving around town all the time! :p
