I have an 05 PR 4.0 Automatic with 84000 miles. At about 45000 i noticed a knocking between 1000 - 2000 rpm. Usually coming out of high throttle slowing for a hill or coming out of a stop. Im not a mechanic and my terminology could be incorrect. I took it to my dealer a few times and they finally adjusted my intake hose. I knew about this TSB and its more of a knocking noise from the engine not a clicking noise. It hasn't gotten worse but I'm beginning to loose acceleration power and Im about to do my 90000 service. Any idea or suggestions to better explain to my master mechanic what it is thats going on with out sounding like a pain in the a$$ customer? Your input is appreciated for sure!! Shoots

my first question is have you changed your plugs yet? These plugs need to be replaced at 30k. If you started hearing knocking at 45k that makes sense. My truck started at 35k. If you have changed them try running plus or premiun gas. If that doesnt work bring it to the shop. i have a feeling your plugs are toast tho. And FYI toyota used 3 denso and 3 ngk plugs on our trucks. no one seems to know why

maybe ask the mechanic when you go in for the 90k service if the valves need to be adjusted. is it more of a knock instead of a ping. you could have spark knock, which it sounds like that may be the case. you can try a higher grade of gas and run some techron thru the tank to see if that takes care of it, and also, time to change the plugs again. if it happens to be spark knock, the higher octane gas should fix that. hope this helps you out man, and you get it squared away quickly!!:)

Try reading up on this thread, might give you some options. My "fix" is to use 91 octane gas.
