It wasn't very fast at all, maybe 25 - 30 mph when I started to hear the whirl!! I thought it was my tires at first, had those changed only to continue to hear the same noise!

Dumb question, but I'm just making sure. My truck being a prerunner do I need an inner seal? As I have no front 1/2 shaft I would assume no.

I have already found the hub/bearing assembly at rockauto, just making sure I get all the parts I need before I start the swap.
    Thanks.

Hey great thread guys. I just want to make sure I have everything right.

Going to need to order the Hub/bearing assembly (DA515040) there is one bearing per side.

Should I deffinatly pick up some seal's and some o-rings and what part numbers would these be?

After reading some more i realise I need some Oil seals how many do I need and what would the parts numbers be?

Am I missing anything for this project?

I know these are very elementary questions, but this is my comprehention for this project thus far.

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for this write-up, my passenger side wheel bearing is done and needs to be replaced. The dealership want's $800 to replace the wheel bearing for only one side. That is some serious cabbage, I said fcuk that......I have ordered all the parts to do both wheel bearings and while I'm at it will be doing the BJ's total for all parts shipped - $223! :D

How close are the FJ and the Tacoma parts wise around the wheel bearing hub assembly? Are the seals and o-rings the same part numberS?

Im just doing the driver side bearing and while I was pressing the bearing out the bearing basically fell apart it was in such rough shape. I had to heat the bearing up to pry it off after it basically fell apart in my hands...... Glad I changed it now befor my 8 hour drive south to edmonton. I have to replace my inner seal and probably my outer one too since there is cracking. I hope my passenger side isnt in such rough shape.

    Thanks for the thread again!

Thanks for the write up, it helped tremendously. Did driver side over the weekend for my pre-runner for $120 total, parts included (got hub for $70 at auto zone and went door to door to find a shop to press it for decent price). A shop quoted me 3x this for labor. Took me under an hour to take it off and about the same to re-install but this was done with wrenches and jack-stands in my garage. Word of warning, I thought I could get by without having to press it...not true. Do not try this without a press it will leave you severely pissed.

do you have to pack the bearings with grease or not since they are pressed in?

Nope, I just put a little grease around the inside of the oil seals. Not sure if it was needed though. The bearings are sealed units.

    OP,

Thanks for the excellent write up and pics; and to St3ve for the video in his sig. You guys made it possible for me to do this DIY.

Interesting that even my Chiltons Manual didn't provide instructions or pictures for changing out the bearings. It basically said to go to a professional because of the special tools required. Don't know why they couldn't have provided instructions for removing the hub and bearing and then advised to go to a machine shop to have the bearings pressed off/on?

    For those reading here:
I first noticed the hum/scrape sound when I used 4WD on the highway about six weeks ago after a snow storm. At first I only heard it in 4WD ... I was initially worried something was going bad in my front diff. In 2WD I didn't hear the sound. Then in the last week I started hearing it in 2WD. I had been planning to change out the front wheel bearing in the Spring regardless because of the known failures I'd read about on TW. So, with a prayer, I decided to change out the front wheel bearings now, hoping that would fix the noise I was hearing.

Good News! All is quiet again. :D I suspect the driver's side was actually the culprit, but it only made sense to change them both.

If you want them to last over 3k then clean out all the worthless grease they come packed with and re-pack them with a premium bearing grease.
