my first oil change

hey guys, I just did my first oil change. The original factory oil came out and in went 5.5qts of mobile1 5w-30 fully sythetic. It seems to drive a little smoother, (maybe it's just in my head). As i was changing the oil filter i noticed a little difference between the factory filter and the ones i got from the stealership. The first set of numbers are the same but the second set of numbers and letters is a little different. can anybody tell me if those are going to be ok? the one with the red seal is the factory filter, as you can see there is a bit of a difference between the two.(see attached pics) how are you guys catching the oil when you remove the oil filter. the little rubber cap in the bottom was a PITA to get it out. I put a little water bottle in the bottom attached to a wire and it seems to work ok, no spills. oh yeah and i also installed my fumoto drain valve. I have never used these valves before, i'll post an update on my next oil change with pros and cons.

90915-YZZD3 on my 2009 4.0L V6. Since that's what was on it from the factory, I would keep using that.

 

I would help but I haven't done my first oil change yet.. :\

 

You are good to go. Mine was the same way. Don't know why, but the oil filter that came from the factory seems to be of better quality than the ones we get from the dealership.

 

Is it just me or does the new filter just look like a Fram with the Toyota name one it?

Also notice you have 5w20 in the pic that says for Honda, Ford And Chrysler, so I'm guessing that is for another vehicle since you said you used 5w30?

 

A few of us have noticed the different oil filters (as well as mixed up plugs). The filter with the red seal used to be readily available, now you have to hunt it down. It has a sponge type media filter instead of paper, extremely high quality, still made in Japan. The replacement that we get from Toyota is a paper type media, probably acceptable quality, made by the lowest bidder.

I bought a case from a dealer in California that orders them in for their OCD Supra and Lexus owners. They should still be selling them. I think the case that I bought was about $150. Ask yourself if it is worth it to you...for me, I bought my 2009 in June of 09 with 8 miles on the odometer and it now has 5,600 miles. That case should last the life of my vehicle (I will probably gift it to the next owner when I sell it).

 

Good observation, I was thinking to my self that somebody would notice that oil pic in the background, and yes sir the 5w20, is for my daily driver. (mazda3) which i consistently get between 29 to 33 MPG's. I drive over 100 miles a day and the taco would just kill me in gas bill.

 

I just use Fram from walmart... Tad shorter but it's what i've used on all my trucks.

Same with the 2.7L, the red filter element type came factory, but the numbers have changed over the years. There were three factory numbers around at the time, the factory filter (red type), and a second filter which looked like your second filter pictured, and then a third filter which I have only seen in pictures and read about which is the same dia, but about 33% larger then the others. If it is a factory filter, like the one pictured you should be fine. But "just because", if I could source out the red element filter or factory filters I would because they do seem to be a much better filter.

 

As far as the rubber plug on the filter drain...get rid of it and permantly install a 5/16" inside diameter hose useing a hose clamp. Run the hose down through the hole in the skid plate. I use a plastic plug to cap off the end after it drains...works great!! The

90915-YZZD3 filter is the correct one to use.

 

The different filter media may be needed during the engine break-in period. It may collect more of the metal shavings and other contaminants.

Good on ya for learning how to do your own maintenance it'll save you a lot of money down the road. Next step for you will be brakes, tire rotation and coolant flush/change. All good things to know how to do and they don't require a vast amount of tools to accomplish.

 

My first oil change: Bought 6 quarts of Castrol GTX, 1 filter, 1 case of beer and a good CD. Kranked up the CD so the neighbors could hear (in case they wanted to help). Drank a few beers. Took a beer break. Removed the oil plug....went looking for the drain pan.....cleaned up all the transmission fluid and replaced the plug....had another beer....removed the right plug this time......slid the drain pan to the correct location to catch the last drop of oil. Took another beer break....Replaced the oil filter....poured 6 cans of BEER into the crank case....the truck rolled over, Burped, and died. I finished drinking the oil and went to the ER. The Taco went to the Stealership!

 

Mine came with a 90915-2004, but these are no longer available stateside, so I use

Just did my 1st oil change. Got my 2006 Taco CPO'd @ 55K. Just put in 5.2L of 5W30 Mobil 1 Oil and Filter @ 57K. Should be good until 62K I would think.

Due to that "Oil Change Mishap" thread, I double checked to make sure that I was unscrewing the Engine Oil Pan drain plug and NOT the Transmission one.

 

Just wedge a old 20oz. water bottle under the filter location to catch the oil coming out of the used filter. Works perfect.

 

Oil change???? What's an oil change?
