my hangers were very soft vs the Group N ones on my WRX, the hanger tool made it easier, but could have easily done w/o it

little comparo of oe vs TRD, you can see the muffler section is smaller diameter in the TRD one, also harder to see but 2.5" exhaust on the TRD vs 2.25" for oe

TRD is made by Bosal, pretty highly regarded exhaust (at least in Subaru circles)

    nice shiny tip :D

Was that from Shoptrd.com? That is where I got mine from for the same deal. The first time I got the wrong one, possibly the TRD exhaust for an FJ, had a black tip, but they immediately rectified the problem and I got the correct one a couple of days later.

This write up made the install a breeze, had the old off and the new one on in about 30-40 minutes. Thanks OP.

yea i got it from shoptrd.com

best price i could find, and customer service/shipping was good and fast. will be attempting the install when i get out of work in the AM. i dont have a torque wrench, can i just tighten until its tight enough? i did pick up a new gasket, and will throw that on at the same time. after looking at the current exhaust, i prob shouldve picked up some new bolts too... we'll see how it goes!

Just make sure you check for leaks afterwards. I put the part numbers for the bolts etc on the first page for those in the future who want to purchase it. The older the exhaust, the more parts to replace I suppose...

    Not much.
Thanks for this write up, I should have looked at this before I installed the TRD. I had no idea that you needed to install a new gasket but it makes sense. Could this be the reason why my exhaust makes a rattling noise at low RPMs just above idle? Thank you.

Old gaskets increase the risk of exhaust leak.
Rattling sounds could be a variety of things.
Get under there are isolate the location of the rattle, take
a vid of it if you can and post it up under the tech section
if you want the most feedback.

This is a GREAT write up! Much appreciated. I talked to a mechanic today that owns a 2012 and installed the TRD exhaust on his truck. I asked him for some tips and he said to jack up the truck by the frame (I would jack up the tow hitch) to let the leaf springs sag and give some more room between the axle and frame. He said it makes it a lot easier when you are working the new exhaust into place.

thanks for this great writeup, thebottomline.
just finished this today, with one hiccup. i ordered the wrong gasket.

i have an 07 with 4.0. the gasket part number is: 17451-0A010
    it's flanged, not flat.

here are some photos of the gasket, to go along with this writeup. haven't seen any photos of the gasket in any of these types of threads.

    wrong, new, and old gasket:

    new and old gasket comparison:

paid cost at the dealer. could have ordered it from Amazon with prime shipping but i had already taken things apart. rode my bike down there and picked it up instead.

it's fun. like you all said, i noticed the smell and tone. it does not drone as much as i expected it to, especially with all the mixed comments. will wait until it has a few miles to notice it settle down.

also, if you're worried about hitting and damaging the cables on the rear axle, you can unclip them and move them out of the way.

thanks again. fun and easy project.

If you reference the part numbers on that diagram you can see the
gasket is labelled 17451 (middle right portion of the image)

Sucks that you had to take a loss on the gasket, but I'm sure someone
out there can buy the other one off you.

I knew about unclipping the lines but it seemed like an extra step. I was just mentioning it clearly in the writeup so nobody accidentally damages it.

Make sure to give feedback after a few months of use. Myself and several users noted the change in sound of the muffler.

yeah, it was my fault for not ensuring it was correct. i'm pretty visual when it comes to this type of work, so photos are the best way i learn. numbers...i have a problem with numbers and diagrams. ugh.

please forgive me, i didn't use a snow shovel. i did, however, use some well-placed boxes while swapping out.

i'll give you all an update when the sound changes. right now i'm quite pleased with the tone. was expecting this horrible droning based on some reviews, but it's surprisingly quiet when i'm cruising. it also helps that i have a light foot. with the 4.0 i like to conserve mpgs and know that cruising around slowly is the best way to do that.

Just installed mine tonight with the help of my girlfriend (she is quite handy). This write up helped a lot. The dish soap made things very easy. I didn't struggle with them at all. The smell coming out is quite harsh. I love the tone. I did get a new gasket and holy shit that's expensive. But no leaks that I can tell of.

    Thanks again!!!

Is this measurement for the uncompressed springs before install? Or after they are installed/compressed?

Installed TRD exhaust today. With my dad's help it was super easy. But damn those rubber hangers. That was the hardest part. Installing the new one was super easy after using WD40 on the hangers and rubber parts.

Does anyone know if its recommended to disconnect negative battery cable when installing to reset ECM?
